Events Rollercoaster Racing TourSupercross series R 9 ound Dunkel slam-dunks Shelby supereross By Barbara Williams Photo by Loren Williams SHELBY, NC, JULY 3 ry to n Dunkel li t the fuse on his CPI Inc.-backed KX60 to explode the 65cc (7-9) class at Shelby Supercross. Dunkel led for all bu t one lap in both the qualifier and the main for a sa tisfyin g win over a very competitive 12rider field . Round nine of the Rollercoaster Racing Tour Supercross Series hosted nearly 220 riders, all of whom were really gJad when the sun went down on a sweltering N orth Carolina afternoon. Perfect JMX track conditions made for great racing, and an extended intermission for fireworks, courtesy of the City of Shelby, wa s a nice bonus. Dunkel came ou t fast on the 65cc (79) qualifier start, with Champion Cycle Sales ' Patri ck Jo h nson on h is he els. Dunkel looked set to take the qualifier win, but John son powered his KTM 50 into th e lead on the last lap, leaving Dunkel no time for a comeback pass. Brandon Rent , .Br a n d o n White and Ch ase Mclntyre rounded out the qualifier' s top five. . Dunkel nailed th e holeshot on th e 65cc (7-9) main-event start and atta cked the Shelby circuit with a take-no-p risoner s att itude, holding off repea ted challenges from both Johnson and [oshHarris , Johnson could get close enough to put a wh eel on Dunkel, but a hard two 'weeks of attempting to qu alify for Loretta Lynn's had taken their toll on him. By the checkered flag, Harris had nosed his Lem into the runner-up slot, ed gin g out Johnson, who was third. Brand on White r od e a cons isten t fourth pl a ce aboa rd his KTM 50, and Luca s Lon g overcame his mechanical problems to finish a strong fifth. Suzuki-mounted Jeremy Allison shut down the 80cc D field with wire-to-wire leads in both the qualifier and the main . The win further pads his Rollercoaster points lead, and Jeremy is set to so on mo ve ou t of the D class fore ver. Lori Zimmerman, Timmy Hall, Tyler Seay and Jim Brown Jr. provided the action immediately behind Allison, with a bit of Joshua Mclaughlin and Justin White thrown into the mix. Hall, Zimmerman, White and Seay gated just south of Allison in the 80 D ma in event, wi th Brown and Mclaughlin lurking. Early on lap two , Mclaug hlin saw an opening and blasted throu gh , puttin g himself three position s up, into fou rth . The racing acti on settled d own to the top three of Harrill, Murph and Allison, with good di cing going on, until Murph mov ed ove r on Harrill coming throu g h th e infield whoops, taking out both him and Allison. JUNE 20 ou n d four o f th e Missouri Hare Scr ambles' Champion ship started and fin ish ed in mu ch th e s a me w ay as th e previous three e ve n ts: . Defending champion Stev e Leivan go t off to a midpack start on his SCR Yamaha WR40 0, methodically w orked his wa y through th e traffic, took ov er the lead , and scored th e overall win. Th e vi ct ory keeps Leivans undefe at ed streak alive in 1999, at a perfect four for four. A t th e s tar t, Chris Thi e le took hi s fourth consecuti ve holeshot when the 11 AA-class rid ers blasted into the slip pery first turn. Close behind , Brandon Forrest er enjoye d his best start of the season , h o lding up s econ d , with Mike Wind mann in th ird. Terry Gi ll ila nd , who was making his first appeara nce at an MHSC event in quite so me time, had h is Ga s Ga s in fourth, whil e Leiva n started his race from the fifth spot. A few miles in to the first lap of the six-lap race, Thiele went down, allowing Forrester to take th e lead and Windmann to move into th~ runner-up spot. Thiel e got goi ng in time to h old off Leivan, wh o had found his wa y around Gill ila n d . Windmann, wh o h as n ot spe nt much tim e riding with Forrester, was willing to hang ba ck a bit and let the yo ung Yamaha rid er lead the way, waiting for a mistake. With only a few hundred ya rds left on lap two , Forrester took a bad line and Wind ma nn moved into th e lead and Leivan closed the gap. Thi ele was still close as well . The top four were still onl y separated b y 10 second s, while Carl Hansen - maki ng a ra re harescram bles appearance - moved into fift h, a minute and chan ge beh ind the lead ers. Soon after the scoring lan e, Forrester we nt down, and Leiva n moved into second and set ou t after Windmann. When the tw o leade rs caught up to a gro up of lapped riders , Windma nn go t a bit held up and Leiva n took over the lead . His lead did not last for lon g, though , as he sta lled his bike in a turn and Wind ma nn re too k the number-on e position, while Leiva n got going just in time to keep Thiele from getting aro und as weJI. R The fourth la p saw the bottom drop ou t of Wind mann's rac e. While in the lead , Windmann got hung up in a section of fallen cedar trees . "J stayed on the main trail through all of the branches, and my bike just stopped," sai d a disappointed Windmann. "I looked down and couldn't see an ything, but I could n' t go forward . It turned ou t there wa s a limb jammed in between the rear tire and the swi ngarm . I was there forev er, and Steve, Chris and Brandon all we nt right ar ound." The fiasco cos t Wind mann aJmos t 2 1/2 minutes that lap and took away any cha nce he had of w inning the victo ry . On ce past Windmann, Leivan upped the pace and put 35 seconds on Thiele, wh o in turn had more than a minute on Forrester, wh o was beginning to fade after hammering out two 'fine laps early in the race. With no pressure from behind and a safe distance on Thiele, Leivan baled off hard, ma ybe due to th e deteri o rating mousse. "I d on 't really know what happened, but I hit a tree with the left side of my bike and bod y, as hard as I have ever hit a tree, " sai d Thiele. " It ra ng my bell , bent the bik e a little bit, and made me see sta rs." Th e fi nal la p w ent s moo th ly for Leiv an, a's he turned in his best lap of th e day and finished with a minute to spare on Thiele. "I had a co u p le of little probl ems today, but th in gs turned ou t all right," sai d Leivan. "I w as s tro ng at th e end, and that is the mo st im portan t part of these rac es . You ' ve got to have something left in yo u at the finish." Thiel e took runner-up honors on his Team Green KX25O, while Dwight Maggard turned in the fastest lap of the day to move aro und Windmann and claim ' his best-ever finish, a' third . Windmann finished fourth after setting the pace for much of the race ; had it not been for the incident on lap four, he would no doubt have finished higher in the results. eM Poor Boys Hare Scrambles Aorence, Missouri Res ults: J une 20, 1999 (Round 4) O/A : 1.
