JUNE s Spo rt Cycles Racing-sponsored Kyle Teel flew into battl e wit h fellow Buckeye Mark Dieh l of Chilli coth e during two heat ed classes of racing a t thi s spec tac u la r race facilit y. With tem peratures still in the 80sat race time , the very techn ica l and well-wat ered su percross-s tyle ci rcu it hos ted more than 200 racers in the firs t part of a two-day event. In moto one of the Sch oolboy cla ss , Teel to ok a nic e hol es hot a nd ran awa y from th e pack. with Dieh l riding a fast pa ce but unable to get past Kawasaki-mounted Derek Sturgell. The second moto was won by upstart Dillion Rhodes on his Skat-Cycles Suzuki, but TeeI' s thi rd p la ce ne tted h i m the overall. wh i le Diehl's hard -r u n second-place finish nctted him seco n d ove ra ll. Stu rgell' s 2- 4 finishes gai ned him thi rd fo r the clas s. with Rhodes' erratic 7-1 finis hes garnering him a respectable four th overall for the day. California. "This was a grea t way for me to finish here before my trip to the overseas final next week ." said Fa ria. " My confidence is sky-hig h. a nd that's what it ta kes to win over there, alo ng wi th a good motor." Glenn Scott wo n the di vision-two ma in, and Vince Bertclucci collected the top prize in division three , In the Handicap main, Fa ria bega n on the 4~ yard lin e, with th ree rid ers sta tio ned between him and the starting tapes . Rich Marcucci sat on the 10, Robert Curry occupied the 20 and Chad Felicia was alon e o n the 30. Bobby Hedden and Bart Bast were 10 yards behind Faria on the SO. Marcu cci, by virtue of his front starting pos ition. took the early lead. with Curry moving up close behind as th e ra ce made its wa y throu gh th e first turn s. Felici a wa s sluggish a t the o nset and wa s pa ssed by the quick-starting Faria just after the first lap was comp leted. After moving in front of Felici o, Faria wen t immediately to the o u tside line a nd at th e o u ts e t of lap three he moved arpund Curry. On ce around Curry. Faria set his sig hts on the lead er, Marcucci. With the roar of the cro wd rising with every position he gaine d, Fa ria mad e short work of the overmatched leader and swooped to the lead just as sta rter Mark Joiners white flag was unleas hed from its stall. Once Faria bad secured the lead . it was clear sailin g to the checkered fla g aboard his BZ Honda /jRM / STP/ Roxann e GM. Bobby Hed den had a good run of his own going, with Bart Bast on his tail. Bast wo rked ins ide of Marcucci and fini shed in th e runner-up spot. Bast fin ishe d third , Marcucci held o n to fo u rth, Curry wa s fifth and Felicio "Tapped it up in sixth. In the Scratch main. Charlie Venegas got the quickes t ga te out of lane three and led the race into the first turns, running the low inside line. Faria started on the outside in lane fo ur and wa s S<.'COnd behind Venegas off the start. Meanwhile, pole sitter Bobby Hedden bea t B.lrt Bast off the line and was ru nni ng in third a co uple of lengths be h ind the fleeing leaders . Fa ria fla w le ss ly worked his o utside magic, gaining on Vene ga s slowly but surely until he pullL-d dea d even at the two-ia p. hal fwa y mark. As Faria worked wid e. attempting to make the pass for the lead in the first turns of lap thJ"E"e, Venegas inexplicably caugh t too much traction exiting turn two and almost tlXlk them both o u t. Venegas admitted . Faria had a comm ent concerni ng the incid ent as well. "Cha rlie kept pushing me o ut w ider, but that was right wh ere I wanted to go anyway," said Faria. "Except for tba t last move, luckily he left me cnough room and I still go t th rough . It reminded me of the old IMS track at San Bernardino. This tr a ck wa s exactl y lik e tha t tonight. Anderson aces Chillicothe Enduro By Jeff Anthony OiILLlC arnE,OH. MAY 24 More than 160 riders took on the challenge of th e C hill icot he Enduro Riders Asso ciat ion ' s an nual tribute to the late Art Mitchell. Trail boss Kevin Clayton laid out a phy sically demanding but ridab le run of approximatel y 85 m iles to begin the 1999 AMA Distri ct I 1 End uro Series, Key time was promptly at 10 a.m.• and the riders began with an easy 1.2- mil e secti on o f warmup trail that connected to a gravel road. A rL from 2.4 to 3.0 miles got everybody back on 'SCt time befor e the fun began. Riders wer e checked at the beginning of the next part of the rid e, a 15mile woods section. All riders dropped sev eral poin tsin this secti on, with the best score of four being claimed by Suz u ki-mounted Jeff And er so n , Te am Green' s Ge ne O' N aH, a n d KTM· mounted Brad Sells and Marty Kehlmeier . The section set the ton e for the d ay as the fo ur fou ght for the cove ted overall win . For the next 40 miles, rid ers rode a mixture of established trails and terrain, includi ng the crossing of Salt Creek. Onl y a ban dful of riders reported problems, as the depth of water wa s only hub-deep. Th e B riders end ed their adventure at 81.2 miles. while the A and AA riders entered the pri vate p ractice track of local ISDE hero Pete Diehl, who could not be there that dav, as he wa s pre running for the upcoming Baja 500. Riders rode a gut·wrenching 4.0 mi les of torture, with the finish line and a cold beverage with in sig h t bef ore o ff-ro a d ace Jeff Anderso n wa s crowned the overall champion.
