lead ing Saenz and Burke. who had passed Sievers and Adam Fichtelman. Burke soon disposed
of Saen z. leaving no doubt th a t he was t he
fastest man on the track. After Burke pressu red
Alba ch for more than a lap, Albach crac ked ,
allowing Burke to slide his Hond a into the lead
and com plete his cha rge to the front of the pack.
The race was not finished, however. a nd Albach
managed to get back arou nd BU1'ke, but only for
a mo ment, as Burk e, wi th mor e mom entu m,
resum ed the lead and charged on to the checkered flag . Second in the moto wen t to Albach ,
- who was closely followed by Fichtelman across
the finish line.
As the pack revved their engin es in anticipa tion of the drop of the gate for the second moto ,
it was evident that Burke was the favorit e to pick
up the win, but Saenz was the quickest with the
clutch and he p ulled another hcleshot out of the
bag . This time , however, Burke was in seco nd
from the get-go, and he was not abou t to give up.
Burke was followed by Fichtelman and Albach.
The race was som ew hat mon otonous until the
end of the t hir d lap, when the pa ck of rid er s
crested The Ledge . The first two riders were the
sa me, bu t FichteIma n had been booted back to
sixth after being passed by Albach, Sievers and
Jeff Morrow. Burke, how ever, could not manage
a pass on Saenz. Later in the mo te, lap ped traffic
finally enabled Burke to ma ke the pass on Saenz
with two laps to go. Meanwh ile, Albach crashed
and relinqui shed his third position to Morrow,
who was still hold ing Sievers a t bay. After surviving a late-race cha rge by Saenz, Burke went
on to victory . Saenz finished second , followed by
a di stant battle for third be tween Mor row and
Sievers, wh ich was won by Morro w .
Bu rke took the overall via his 1-1 moto finishes, with second go ing to Saen z for his 4-2,
and third went to Morr ow, wh o finished 5-3.

REM Glen Helen MX wins

H a ving w on mu ltiple mot ocr os s Vet Wo rld
Cham pionships, win ning races is nothing new
for Alan Olson. It was business as usual w hen
he han d ily sto le away both moto s of Over 50
Masters competition du rin g round five of Racing Enterprises Motorsp orts ' Glen Helen Saturday Spring Series .
Wh en the racers lined up for the first goaround , it wa s Y400-rnounted Bengt Johansson
snagging the ho les hot . Olson ma neuvered his
YZ250 into second, while Hors t Leitner ran third .
. The top five po sitions we re fiUed out by [o dy
Weisel and then Ch uck Minert aboard his thumping YZ400. Olson wasted no time, and he made
the pass on Joha nsson just . .as the racer s ca me
through the sco ring sec tion for the first time.
Once in the lead , Olson immediately blasted ou t a
five-seco nd cus hio n for himself. Joha nsson and
Leitner bega n to squabble over the second spo t as
the two riders raced side by side for two laps .
One ride r on the move was Suzuki -mo unted
Marino Bastionell. The RM250 pilot raced all the
wa y u p to the fourth posi tion by the half wa y
mark in the mot o after ga ting d ead last. Out
front. Olson was relen tless, and he continued to
pull aw ay from the pack as the mot o wore on.
Bastion ell continued to charge forw ar d, and by
the time the race had on ly two mor e lap s to go,
he was right on the duo of Johansson and Leitner. who we re still d icing it up . Bastionell was
methodical as he picked off first Leitner an d
then Joh a nsson just after th e w hite flag was
given. When the checkered flag came out , Olson
was the first to see it. Bastione ll completed his
fantastic rid e in the runner- up positi on, wh ile
Johans son rod e in third . Weisel and CR250 rid er
Denn is McAdam filled ou t the top five.
As the second mota left the line. it was Tom
Whi te d ropp ing the hammer on his KX250 to
nail th e holeshot . Johansson , alwa ys a strong
starter, slid into second, whi le Bastionell ga ted
mu ch better this time and ran third . Olson jockeyed into the fourth position, and Geo rge Spearin g scoo ted his KX250 int o fift h. As the pac k
negot iated the second circu it, Olson showed he
was head and shoulde rs above the competition,
as he wen t from fourth to firs t on one lap . Once
in the lead , Olson soon distanced himself some
10 seco nds in fro n t of seco nd - p laced ri de r
White. Johans son and Bastionell were locked u p
in a battle for third and fourth . Whit e held comfortably in second, as he was able to put abou t
five seco nds' worth of space bet ween himself
and the Johansson /Bastionel1skirmish.
As the contest wore on, Johansson refused to
giv e in to the rep ea ted pass a ttemp ts of Bastione ll. When the checkers carne out at the end
of the mota , it was Olso n coasting in for another
mot o wi n. Wh ite follo we d him in for seco nd
place, while Johansson won the battle for th ird .
Bastionel1 se ttled for fourth, and Leitner rode in
to fill ou t the top five.
On the d ay, the ove rall victory went to Olso n
by vi rtue of his p er fect 1-1 rid es . Joh anss on
earned the runner -u p spot with his 3-3 sco res,
while Baslionell was third with his 2-4 tally. The
fo urth posit io n was fill ed by Leitne r af te r he
posted 6-5 sco res, a nd McAdam wa s fifth with
his 5-6 finishes .
