Marty Spe llma n ma de the long trip from Portla nd , Oregon, to finis h third overall. Spe llma n wo n the first heat race of the night , bu t a fall in the second heat spoiled his bid, for the overall. Jeff Wat ters finished fou rth, and Class C rid er Dan Knudsen took fifth. Oa tfield Raceway played host to more than 250 rid ers on the day with unusual >but plea sant - cool wea the r, making for ideal racing cond itions. The first mota S< W Yamaha-mounted Mike l Matson grab the holes hot, a head of Markarian, Just in Woods, Tyson Enzweiler and Anthony Hou ser. As th e p ac k hit th e fi r st tabl etop, Markari an shot past Ma tson to ta ke over th e lead . Howev er, Mats on w o u ld ma k e s u re Ma rkari an fou ght too th and na il to keep that lead as the du o pu t on a show, mirroring each othe r for nea rly th e e nti re rac e. Markari an 's adv antage carne on the big step-up jump, where he consisten tly ga ined ab out a 10-bik e-len gth lead by d earin g thc obstacle, while Matson , having not yct mastered the jum p, had to sing le over it. However, Matson appea red faster in the turns a nd stra ig hts, as he qu ickly reeled Ma rka rian back in each la p. B.1Ck in the pack, Woods continued to hold down third, wh ile Aaron Di'Ciano, who had a poo r start, made his way through the . pack and came up to challenge Woods. Altho ug h tho tv vo were a little off the pace of the front-runners, the race for th ird was intense, as Di'Ciano a ppea red to have an edge in the whoop section, tho ug h Wood s, who appeared d etermi ned , continued to hold his groun d . Meanwhile, up front, Markarian and Matson crossed the wh ite flag nearl y side by side, a nd one mistake would mak e the di fference. Unfortu na tcly fo r Mat son, Marka rian didn ' t ma ke a ny, an d the chec kered flag waved Mar karian across for the win, with Matson in tow. Woods took third , ahead of Di'Cian o, with Honda pilot Rory Rad o vich pu tting in a valia nt effo rt to rou nd out the top five. Moto two once again sa w Matson lead the pack in to the first tum, with Markarian, Wood s, Di'Ciano and Enzweiler in pursuit. Matson bobbled in a tricky left-ban de r and Mar karian and Woods made th eir way by . Mat son qu ickly recovered and zapped Wood s in the wh oop section. Wit h Ma rka rian leading, Ma tson p ut his head down and took off after the leader. Matson qui ckly reeled in Markarian and took a high line a rou nd a righ t-han d er, movin g his way pa st Markarian . With th e two so evenly mat ched , once again only a mistake wo uld make the difference. That misti1kc wo u ld come cou rtesy of Mat son . Hon n q uickly mad e his sponsor, Jerry Birky of Mid west KTM, proud by gra bbing the holc shot in the hotly contes ted 125cc class . Hann made it all look easy from there. Fo llowing Ho n n we re C ride rs Ga rre tt McCormick and Ben Liss. B ride r Chris Stringer followed in fourth aboard his Suzu ki. At the halfway ma rk, Honn had pulled a ID-second lead over McCo rmick, Liss a nd Stringer, a nd mov in g th ro u gh th e pack was Chris Christensen. Meanwhile, McCormick and Liss we re having a battle to see who would be number one in the .125cc C class. Yamaha -mounte Christensen -d joined the battle wh en they d ropped off the red esi gned dow n h ill freewa y . C h ris te nsen moved. a head into the lead thro ugh th e infamo us whoop section . Liss got by McCorm ick on the whi te-flag la p to set up the finish ing order. Honn took the checkers in th e A class, with C hristensen ta king seco nd a nd fi rst C-class rid er, followed by Criders Liss and McCormick. Honda rid er Na tha n Brem er g rabbed th e second- mo te holesh ot, with Ch ristense n, Liss a nd Hon n following to the first tank jum p. By the thi rd lap , Hon n again took the lead , wit h Stringer in tow . Breme r still held first in the C class. This running order stay ed the sa me to the finish. O n the stre ngth of his combined scores, Christensen too k the overa ll with a 1-2 tall y. Bremer managed to salvage his d ay by takin g th ird overall with a 5-1 finis h. Ano the r fu ll gate saw Ove r 30 A rider Jim Royko pull the ho lesh ot , a hea d of Chris Bolint a nd Perry Stabler. Royk o took the win in the Ov er 30 A d ass . Th e Over 40 da ss had fallen in bch fnd him , tak in g posit io ns two th rough fou r and se pa mt ing them selv es fro m the Over 30 B and 16-24 d asses . On the seco nd lap, Stabler a nd his Hond a took ov er the lead in the Ove r 40 class, leaving fello w Ove r 40 rid er Bo lint to fend off th e a dvanccs o f Mike Horne's Hond a. At the chec ke rs, Royk o took the Ove r 30 A win, wit h Ove r 40 rid ers Stab ler, Balint a nd Hor ne followi ng. The firs t Over 30 B rid er to cross over was M ich ael Lech ien , w ho wa s follo we d by 16-24-da ss rid er Rick Mezo on his Honda.
