"Up un til today, 1 never rode a 250cc befo re" Williams sa id, "b ut Russ Wagema n 'fro m Pit Pro is go in g to sp on sor me on this bike for the Mam mo th race, and he wanted m e to s ta r t getting some race time on it." Will iams pulled lip to the lin e a nd jo ined some 20 o ther co mpetitors. "Actua lly, 1 d idn't know wha t to ex pect, si nce mu st of the guys are a lot olde r then me," said 16-yea r-old Willia ms. When the gate dropped, Williams' first experi ence ma y no t have been w hat he was hoping for. " T he 2505 ha v e so mu ch powe r," sa id Williams. "I jus t spun side w ays and go t a dead last start." Williams went to work and wa s very impressi ve in the way th a t he picked off his competitors by maki ng pass after pass o n his way to the . fro nt of the pack. . "This bi ke is easy to rid e, o nce yo u get go ing," he sa id . "There is so much power, all you do is ga s it and yo u' re gone. " Willia ms wen t o n to w in the moto d espite the fact that he had to make a darin g last-d itcheffor t pas s on Vincen t Baroni for the lead. Thi ngs went m uch smoother for 'W illiams in . the a ll-im po r ta nt second mo tu af ter he ga te d ins ide the top three. "I go t a go od s ta rt in the seco nd mot a an d passed a few guys rig h t aw ay, then cr uised the res t o f the race for the win," he sa id. " It w as really ea sy ." Willia ms we nt on toto p Mike Licitra, who turned a pa ir of third -place finish es in to second overa ll in front of Jo hn Bu tle r, Da r re n Sta ffer a nd Vince nt Baroni. Williams loo ked like a shoo- in for the 125cc Novice-class w in af ter his firs t-mot e victory. But Wi lliams ma d e a big mistak e that would ul tima tely cost him a sh ot a t ea rn ing two class wi ns. "I missed m y seco nd mota," Will iams said. "All I know is, 1 wa tche d a s tar t go up the hill a nd th oug ht to m yse lf , ' 1 kn o w those gu ys : Then it hit me - 'Ma n, tha t was m y class!"
