E\'cnts f (Above) Adam Owsley won the first 250cc Novice moto and came from behind to win the second moto, posting a perfect 1-1 score at Starwest Cycle Park In Moreno Valley, California. (Left) Winner Chartie Venegas leads Mike Faria and Jimmy Sisemore during the SCratch main at Fast Frtdays In Auburn, California. sailed by Woods. Woods did his best to keep Vohland in sight, but he found the seasoned veteran wanted no part of a challenge. Vohland steadily increased his lead as the race wore on and eventually finished with a huge lead. In the 125cc Pro race, Vohland copied his earlier performance and looked faster, even with a rougher track to deal with. Vohland once again circulated the track in flawless fashion and was never challenged, easily taking another victory. "I felt faster in my second motes and was pushing myself a little bit harder," said the FMF Honda/Thor/ Aria/ Alpinestars-backed Vohland. "The best way to stay in shape is to race, and I used to do a lot of GFl events before, so why stop now?" In the 250cc Intermediate class, Merced Powersport/Fox/Goat-backed Craig Truglio powered his Kawasaki to an impressive overall victory via convincing 1-1 moto. scores. Except for an early challenge in both motos from Suzukimounted Chris Vend ley, Truglio had his way and crossed the finish with room to spare. Truglio did the same in the 125cc Intermediate class, but he found it a little tougher in the first moto, courtesy of Steve Mertens. The Yamaha rider kept Truglio behind him for the first part of the moto and appeared to have the speed to end it that way, but a faU changed things, as Truglio inherited the lead and motored on to the eventual victory. [n moto two, Mertens got a near-last-place start but managed to claw his way through the pack in speedy fashion. However, the chore of catching Truglio, who had opened a sizable lead, was too tough a task, and second was all that was left. Results Pee Wu Track 50 PW IJI{: 1. Sober Photo By Gen Moore AUBURN, CA, MAY 28 Charlie Venegas topped the leaderhoard in both the Handicap and Scratch main events at the Fast Fridays Gold Country Fairgrounds Speedway oval in Auburn, California. Venegas rides the weekly Speedway schedule in Auburn on Friday nights and then travels south nearly 500 miles on Saturdays to compete at the Orange County Fairgrounds facility at Costa Mesa. . "This win doesn't make up for getting disqualified"in the run-off at the American Qualifier last week," he said after his double victory, "but it will make the flight to Costa Mesa a little more pleasant." The initia1 leader in the Handicap main was Rich Marcucci, who began the race from the 10yard line. Chad Felicio started alone from the 30 but lasted in second place for less than one full lap, as he was somewhat rudely displaced by Venegas, who was the first 40-yard starter off the line. Billy Jamuro and Jimmy Sisemore were also staged from the 40, and they followed in single file behind Venegas as he passed Felicio and went in pursuit of leader Marcucci. Sisemore fonowed Janniro until lap four, when he moved inside the sp~dy youngster and into third place. Meanwhile, up front, Venegas was having more trouble with the pesky Marcucci than he expected. '1 thought I would get the lead sooner than the last lap:' said Venegas after the race. "Fortunately, he bobbled a bit in turn two, and that let me through." Marcucci did a nice job of leading the first four laps, but Il'hen Venegas upped the ante after the white flag, Marcucci succumbed to the pressure and fell back to third. Sisemore was ready when Venegas took the lead and he quickly followed past Marcu.cci into second place, but with less than a lap to go, he equid only watch as Venegas drove his Jawa to the checkered flag. Sisemore was second, and Marcucci got back in line for third, ahead of Janniro. Bart Bast was fifth, and Felicio wrapped it up. Three riders from the Handicap main were also in the Scratch finale. Janniro was on the pole, Sisemore was to his right in lane two, and Venegas was against the wall in starting box four. Joining the three was Mike Faria, on the groove in lane three. The first attempt to get the last race in the books lasted just long enough for Janniro a.nd Sisemore to slam together in the front straight before they even reached the first turn. On the restart, Venegas led Faria through the first curve, but when third-placed Janniro straightened up in turn two to avoid hitting Faria, Sisemore clipped his back wheel, sending them both to the turf again. The third time, in this case, was not a charm, as once again Venegas led the way, with Faria close behind, only to have Sisemore spin in the apex of turns one and two, collecting Janniro in the process. The crowd roared its approval as the third restart made it past the first set of turns, with Venegas clear at the gate and out in front of Sisemore, Faria and then Janniro. Once Venegas was in front and smelled the double win, he rode flawlessly to his first Scratch main at Fast Fridays in 1999. In his haste to reel in ~he fleeing Venegas, Sisemore slipped off the line in lap three, which allowed Faria to move up to second place. Sisemore fought back but came up short at the end and settled for third place. Janniro suffered some spoke damage in the third crash and wobbled home in fourth. Results SCR: l. Owsley a hoot at Starwest MX By Tony Alessi MORENO VALLEY, CA, MAY 22 Adam Owsley, the sell-proclaimed originator of, the motocross back flip, sent a rip curl through- out the 250cc Novice class by dominating both motes of competition during the West Coast Motor Sports series finale at Starwest Cycle Park. Donnie Fuller, from nearby Temecula, gave Owsley the most difficulty, but in the end not even a dead-last start in the second mota cou1d stop Owsley from finding the victory podium. After a runaway first moto, Owsley's skills were put to the test after he gated nearly last in the all-important second moto. Up front, Fuller and his Yamaha of Corona-backed Y2400F tried to make a dean getaway from the field, and for the most part he almost did, by opening up about a 15-secood gap over second-placed Chaz Smith. Unfortunately for Fuller, Owsley was on a mission, and he quietly cut a path toward the leader. With just under two laps to go, Owsley found himself only about eight secoods behind. Owsley tucked his head in and went to work on Fuller, and by the time the checkered flag waved, Owsley was in the lead and in control of the mota, taking the overall victory. Duane Benner continued his dominance over the Vet class by once again pulling off two gateto-flag moto victories. YZ125-mounted Jerry Hensley was a solid second tonight, while Joe Wilardson, Tony De La Crux and Phillip Toboada rounded out the top five. Cory Costa was the big winner in the 60cc Starter division aIter Jeremy Sincox, Channing Ratkowski and company aU took themselves out of contention. Sincox crashed a.nd spent almost a lap restarting his machine in the opening moto of the 60cc Starter class. In the second moto, Sincox jumped the gate and Ratkowski crashed in the first turn. Ratkowski r.-entered the race and went on to an eventual 10th-place finish. while Costa caught and passed race leader Curtis McLellan and went on for the mota and overall win. Parker Eckman had a big night, finishing third in front of Andrew Serrano, Ratkowski and Derek Fero. Results Sm.a11 TrKk 50 STK STR~ (~): 1. Mason Mill evOllm); 2. Jesse Sdalfa (IC[M); 3.
