Gibson lethal at CMXR
By Bob Alloy
CARLSBAD, CA, MAY 8
Things did not start too smoothly for the 38
Riverside OTMX racers at Carlsbad Raceway, as
they found themselves slipping and sliding on a
very overwatered track. Bikes and riders were
all over the uphill at the beginning of practice.
Racers had to be flagged away from the uphill,
and it was eventually bypassed completely for
the remainder of the practice session. Fortunately, by the fifth moto, the entire track was dry
enough to race on.
Hootie Davis began by putting his Honda
out in front of the Master A class. jim Gibson
took over the lead after the first lap. Gibson
proved unbeatable and was rewarded the win,
as Davis filled the second spot.
Gibson got the holeshot in mota two and continued his fast pace on every lap to clinch another
win. Mark Anden;on zapped the second spot.
Tim Daily led the Masters-class action in his
race to the first turn, with Dave Jacobus in close
pun;uit. jacobus then made the right move and
blasted past Daily and stretched his lead for the
win. Daily hung in and collected second. Keith
Kearing, who moved up from the Expert class,
grabbed the lead and dominated the track all six
laps to earn his first-place status in moto two.
Jack Roten crossed over with second.
In the Expert class, George Spearing had his
Kawasaki out in front, with Paul Heckman
closely following. Heckman stayed right on
Spearing and on.Illp four he made his move
past. However, Heckman prevailed and beat
Spearing to the finish.
The second moto started out with Bob Ruder
rocketing out with the holeshot. He owned it for
two laps, at which tim".Spearing muscled past.
It all went Spearing's wax from there. Beckman
finished second after passing Ruder on lap five.
Amateur Phil Blackburn gated with the
holeshot and led for two laps. Randy Bruce
charged past at that point. Bruce proved to be
the fastest as he sped away, leading all the others. Blackburn kept the power up and claimed
second, while Barry Hale slotted third and Bruce
Cornell followed in with fourth.
Geoff Arnold took the lead position early on
in mota two, and he ruled until Dennis Rosenberg moved in on lap two. Rosenberg kept the
power up the rest of the way and raced away
with the big win. Bruce owned second, while
Blackburn secured third and Bale was fourth.

EAST BEND, NC, MAY 2
The U.S. Eastern Motocross Spring Series made
its turn toward the homestretch as East Bend
Speedway hosted the eighth round~the"ffi:-race series, and local hero Jim Neese took three
overall wins on the day. Tom Morgan
Racing/Ballzee/O'Neal-backed Neese twisted
the throttle and rode his way to sixth overall in
the AMA East Coast 12Sec Supercross Series, so
eese's pace was way faster than anyone else's
at the track. He was in a class by himseU.
The only threat Neese felt all day was in the
final l25cc Pro moto, as Renthal/No Fear/Pro
Art Works-sponsored Mike Martin grabbed the
'holeshot while Neese floundered around at the
tail of the field. But once Neese had his YZ heated up, he set out after Martin, catching him with
a little more than a lap to go. Having just
worked through a tough field, Neese was
pumped and quickly shot past Martin down the
front straight, putting a cap on another mota
win. Neese took the sweep over Martin, with
Yamaha of Luberton's Mark Wagner rounding
out the top three.
Martin was back again, trying to chase down
Neese in both the 250cc Pro and Over 25 A classes, but the end result was much the same. The
250cc class saw the same trio of eese, Martin
and Wagner make the podium, while Scott ShipleY slid his way past Martin in the Over 25 class
to take runner-up to eese. Martin held off
YZ400 pilot Brad Proctor to make the podium in
the Over 25 A race.
A healthy turnout of 250cc C riders ensured
some tight radng in the class. Brad Porterfield
took control as moto one of 250cc C race got
under way. Porterfield held the point by the skin
of his teeth all the way to the checkers. Aaron
Harmon put the pressure on Porterfield for the
entire moto, just doing what he could to keep
Suzuki-mounted Scott Dineen at bay. AIler
working through the pack to reach the top five,
Steve Chambers settled into fourth, over
Christopher Miller.
The second moto saw things get shaken up a
little bit, as the competition was stiff and anybody could take the win. Dineen ended the day
as the victor by virtue of winning the second
mota, over Miller and Harmon. Harmon's consistent riding made him the runner-up, while
Porterfield relied on his first-moto win to back
up his fourth-place ride in mota two to get on
the podium in third. Even Miller's second in
moto two was not enough to make the top three,
and he had to settle for fourth. Jason Geyer
made the best of a Chambers DNF to work his
way into the top five, just barely edging out
Anthony Pinnisi.
