Carpenter tacks down win at Hurricane Hills Motocross By Jim sanderson CUFFORD, PA, MAY 9 Manchester Honda-sponsored Paul Carpenter smoked the field in the 125 and 250cc Expert classes with perfect 1-1 scores for the day. Track conditions were quite muddy due to heavy rains that fell on Friday and Saturday. By the second half of the race program, the track had dried out considerably. About 250 riders braved the wet and muddy condition~"to race the 26 classes slated for the program. Dag Boyesen got the racing under way in the 250cc Expert class when he managed a clean holeshot despite the muddy conditions. Trailing him were Mark Hopkins, Brian Hill and Robert Eichlin. By the time the pack cleared the newly revised Hurricane rhythm section, the top five were lloyesen, Hopkins, Carpenter, Eichlin and Clint Esposito. Carpenter passed Hopkins for second just after the spectator triple, but Hopkins had second back by the huge Hurricane step-up. Boyesen had a five-second lead by halfway through lap one. Hopkins went down when his front tire washed out as he was entering a corner, which allowed Carpenter to take second, Eichlin third, Esposito fourth and Brian Hill fifth. Hopkins remounted in sixth. At the start of lap two, the top three remained unchanged, while Esposito crashed, allowing Hill to move up to fourth and Hopkins to fifth. Hopkins then began putting pressure on Hill for fourth. The plan apparently worked, because Hill then dumped it, allowing Hopkins to take fourth. At about the same time, a battle for the lead was under way between Boyesen and Carpenter. Carpenter managed to get I I ; .. Q • §! 0- N GI C ..., ::0 36 around BoyeSen on the long straight at the back of the track, along the tree line. Carpenter quickly began to pull away and had a six-second lead by lap three, and he increased it to 10 seconds by the beginning of lap four. Carpenter took the checkered flag with more than a 2Q-second lead. Rounding out the top five were Boyesen, Hopkins, Eichlin and Richard Heverly. Carpenter nailed the holeshot in the second 250cc Expert moto and never looked back. Trailing behind were Boyesen, Hopkins, Eichlin and Jed Schappert. Hopkins block-passed Boyesen for second by dO'lbling at the end of the rhythm section, causing Boyesen to go down in the corner: The leaders were now Carpenter, Hopkins, Eichlin, Schappert and I;leverly. Boyesen remounted in sixth. Heverly moved up to fourth, while Boyesen blew by Schappert on the Hurricane step-up to take fifth. Carpenter's lead was 13 seconds by lap three, with Hopkins, Eichlin, lloyesen and Heverly trailing. lloyesen got around Eichlin for third near the halfway mark of lap four, Carpenter took the checkers with a 17-sec.ond lead and whipped his bike over the spectator triple for the crowd. Rounding out the top five were Hopkins, Boyesen, Heverly and Schappert. Results 50 P/W: 1. jesse Morris (Yam): 2. Austin Mulhlm\ (Yam). 50 (4-6l: 1. Anthony Peregrin (Cob): 2. Winsett, Lewis win Trail-Way Short Track By Len and Ben Breech HANOVER, PA, MAY 1 Ricky Winsett Jr. and John Lewis V continued their early-season domination at Trail-Way Speedway's short track. Winsett took the 600cc A and Sportsman finals; Lewis destroyed the 65cc class, while Brian Phillips Jr. kept the ABBA Services-sponsored Lewis honest in his 85cc (7-11) final. An unusual double win was recorded by Larry Burkholder. He easily won the 600cc B contest and aJs.o took the Over 40 final victory, which usually goes to an A rider. Mike Klopp took advantage of a lapped rider to slip by racelong leader Jim Hollister to take the Over 30 win. Jake.johnson took advantage of Roy Miller's misfortune to take the 250cc A victory, while Phil Libhart slipped under John Winsett Jr. for the 750cc A win. Dave Smith again took the 500cc Two-Valve victory. Brett Pugh kept up his stranglehold on the SOcc Oil-Injected class, although, as the only SOcc (4-6) rider entered, he easily won the finaL Bobby Weir was the SOcc (7-8) winner. Shawn Baer won the 125cc B class, and Tinuny Mitchell took the 250cc B final. Winsett took the 600cc A wins, with Kevin Vames second, separated by two-hundredths of a second, In the lone Sportsman heat, Varnes beat Winsett in one of the fastest six laps in the 27-year history of the track. But Varnes was scratched from the finals because he was not feeling good. With his main competition sidelined, Winsett appeared to have it wrapped up, but Roy Miller had other ideas. He led the 600cc A field out of the second tum, with Winsett, Don Mullen, Phil Libhart and Mike Klopp starting to lose some ground to the front duo. While Mullen ran a lonely third, Libhart and Klopp swapped fourth several times during the race. At the end of the third lap, Winsett shot under Miller and pulled several lengthS by the end. Klopp ended the battle for fourth when he got a little high in the first turn on the finallap and low-sided. Winsett had an easier time in the Sportsman contest, jumping in front of Mullen. Jim Chapman grabbed the holeshot of the 750cc A final, with John Winsett Jr., Phil Libhart, and Mike Keane behind him. Winsettand Libhart passed Chapman at the end of the second lap as they jumped out in front of the rest in their battle for the lead. Winsett's Triumph started to miss slightly in the turns, and Libhart flnaJIy got under him for the lead just past the halfway point. After a couple of false starts, Roy Miller put a few lengths on Jake Johnson, Jim Haas and Joey Tyeryar at the completion of the operung lap and started to pull away from the tight Johnson/Haas battle for second. On the third lap, it suddenly became a battle for the lead as Miller coasted into the infield with a locked-Up engine. For the rest of the race, Johnson kept his Deptford Hondasponsored Honda just in front of Haas. Results 50 OIL-IN]: l'. Brett Pugh (Yam); 2. Josh Standiford (Yam); 3. Mike Diffenderfer (Yam); 4. Thornton splinters Barona Oaks Motocross By Homer Eubanks RAMONA,CA,MAY2 The motocross action at Barona, Oaks Raceway was stinging as Sean Thornton turned out to be a thorn in·the sides of the Pro 125cc and 250cc riders. The 250cc Intermediate riders were grouped in with the 125cc 250cc Pro class, and intermediate Sean Thornton spanked the Pro field in both motos. Although he proved himself to be faster, Thornton could take start lessons from Lars EricLarsson, as Larsson absconded with the holeshot in both motos. Thornton, however, was able to maneuver around Larsson early in both oootos. Thornton used his horsepower to outdistance Larsson over the infield triple in both motos. Japanese rider Masaki Hiratsuka took home the Pro money and put pressure on Thornton in both motos. Hiratsuka was third off the line in both motos but managed to take control of his class by the third lap in each moto. Chad Sparks took home the second-place money as Larsson DNFed the second moto. Michael Sleeter came home the big ]2Scc winner. Sleeter laid to waste all the 125cc intermediate riders, although Joshua West and Jake Elkins gave him a lot of competition. West took second in moto one and Elkins had a DNF. In the second moto, Elkins kept it together and crossed over second, and West was back in fifth. Sleeter also took repeat wins in the 125cc (16-25) division. Again, West turned out to be Sleeter's biggest competition, crossing over second in both motos. Elkins made his presence felt with repeat third spots. Cory Macomber showed the 125cc (12-15) riders the fastest route around the B-arona course. Macomber recorded two wins, with Steven Haughelstine trailing in both motos. Clinton Pierce took third on the day with two third-place finishes. The Navarro brothers continued their dominance ll\ the 80cc classes. Josh Navarro took home the Intermediate honors and Joey won the Novice class. Joey Navarro finished fourth in the Supermini battles but showed tl,e other 10 riders the fastest rou te to turn one in each moto. Mickey Griffin won the Supermini overall after Jesse Casillas DNFed the first moto with a broken chain. Casillas came back in moto two for the win, finishing fifth for the day. Casillas was given trouble in tl,e 80cc Expert class by Anthony Bruscella. Bruscella bested Casillas' effort in moto one, but Casillas came back in the following moto, when it counted. In the 80cc Beginner class, Matthew Adams won the class with a pair of deuces. Adams crossed over behind Dennis Van Atta in moto one and then followed Chase Takacs across in the second moto. Dakota Garner took repeat wins in both the Pee Wee (0-6) Stock and Modified classes. Austin Ballard was Gamer's biggest threat in the Stock class, as Ballard took the runner-up spot in both motos. Cody Trotter provided Garner with some notable competition in the Modified division. Trotter was able to hold off Kyl~ Corfman in both motos to take second overall on the day. Results INTRO TO MX: I.
