Marco poleaxes minis at Carlsbad Motocross By Kirk Chandler CAR~AD, CA, MAR. 27 52 European mini racer GlacornelJ Marco swept both 80cc Novice-class motos at the CMXR Winter Series finals. Marco railed arow1d the mini pack in both motos, catching the 125cc and 250cc Beginner-dass leaders. When the gate fell for the first moto, Tristan Kallas and I\is YZSO were out front and pulling through the infield. Marco got a mid pack start but made quick work of the mini field. By the end of the first lap, Marco had caught the tail end of the first gate of riders, and from that point on it was a game of patience as he tore the competition to shreds. By the end of the third lap, Marco had moved around Sharlin Humphreys to take over the fourth spot on the track. Marco had three more riders to passin less than two laps, and the first rider to get passed was 125cc rider Shane McCassey. Without hesitation, another pass was made almost immediately on Paul Terry, who was competing in the Vet 30 Beginner class. When the white flag dropped, only one rider was between Marco 'and the overall moto win. That rider was 125cc Beginner Jonathan Robinson, and Marco made the pass in the back section of the track, giving young Marco the class' lead and the overall win against the big bikes. Marco lost the race to the first turn again in the second moto, as Brandon Friestat took the lead through the opening hairpin corner, Marco was again on a mission to capture the overaU moto win wt:llie beu1g on an 80cc motorcycle. As he started on the second row, this appeared to be nearly impossible, yet he had done it once and he was bound and determined to do it again. He carved through the pack with fierce speed and awkward lines at which most Carlsbad locals would cringe. Meanwhile, three other riders had a progressive battle going on at the fr.ont of the field. When the white flag flew, the trio of Rob Guzzo, Robinson and Terry had been reeled in by Marco! With only one lap left, it would have been a miracle if Marco were to pull off another upset. but it was not meant to be. Guzzo and Robinson managed to squeak their front wheels across the line before Marco. could blaze around them. The field of 80cc Novice racers round the first corner. at Carlsbad Raceway. Amateurs attack Silverdo~e Supercross By Carl Davis PONTIAC, MI, APR. 11 After close to 65,000 faos watched Jeremy McGrath cruise to victory in Saturday evening's professional supercross, around 1500 amateurs stayed over and attacked the same track on Sunday mo.rning for the nation's only amateur supercross. A somewhat toned-doM1 but still very challenging track was necessary to make the track passable for a variety of riders at the 24th annual Michigan Motorcycle Dealers Association-sponsored Silverdome International Amateur Supercross Championship. Among the wide variety of rider competing at the event were some Micro (4- to 6-year-ola) competitors. Joshua L.1scola and Robert Goupil! battled for first place in their Micro main event. Lascola ended up the victor. At the other end of the racing spectrum were the Over 45 veteran riders. Ohio veteran Henry Gref tried to hold off the crafty Skip Stewart. TIle duo has been involved in motocross racing for a number of years and are still going strong, On the day, Gref was the strongest. _ In the middle of the range was 16-year-old fan Hammond, who has recently moved up to the A class and is considering the big move into U,e pro ranks soon. Hammond had'a strong showing at the dome, taking wins in the 125cc A class and the 16- to 24-y~ar-old division as well. Other riders with strong riding perfor· mances and double cla.ss wins included mini rider Mickey Marshall, who ruled the 80cc Expert class over Adam Jones. Marshall also took the Supermini-class win over Carl Schlacht. Robert Huston was the king of the veteran riders at the dome, winning the Vet Over 35 class ahead of Curt Holzer and David Mack. Huston also won the Over 40 cl.:,ss over Brian Broad well and Brett Doolittle. 51 (4--6); I. Joshua Lascola; 2. Robert Goupill; 3. Travis Smith; 4. Brandon Addicotl; 5. Mitchell SfANTON, MI, APR. 3 On a day that had temperatures in the high 80s, the racing was as hot as the weather. Many riders turned out for a wonderful day of District 14 competition. The turnout was so large that qualifiers were needed to narrow down the fields for the 125 B, 125 C and 250 C classes. Nate Larsen flew to the overalJ win in the 250cc division. Suzuki rider Jason Ashby was second, 'Meanwhile, Joshua Woods won the 125cc Bclass. Jeremy Hughson took a narrow win over Kyle Kohler in the 16- to 24-year-old age group. Hughson had the third-fastest lap of the day with a time of 1:53. Matthew Crown and his Kawasaki had a very busy day. Crown won the Over 25 and Over 30 classes a.nd took second in the 250cc A race. He also'had the second-fastest I~p time, a 1:51. Anticipation ran high for the 250cc A race, the fastest class of the day. Fo( the second moto, a huge crowd gathered at the l20-foot valley jump. In most of the afternoon classes, two or three races in each race would jump the valley. However, the star·studded 250cc A race had everyone high in the air. During the actual race, Matt Maximoff battled with Matt Crown and Jimmy Wilson for the moto win. Results· 50 SHAFT: I. Jumes Roberts (Yam); 2. Adrian Ford (Yan;t); 3. Austin L. Nelson (Yam); 4. Burleson Motocross By Helen Wheels BURLESON, TX, APR. 25 Usually, on an "iHy" weather day, the iron men of old motocross racing fjll the park The "honey-do" list must have been long on this particular race day, as only 32 entered vintage machines were logged'on the race-results sheets for tl,e second round of the Texas Vintage Rae· ing Club Spring Series, held at Burleson Motocross Park. Dave Allard, aboard his KX400, and CZmounted Ronnie Welch stretched off the start toward the first turn, with Allard nailing the holeshot in the fitst moto of the combined Vintage Intermediate and M,asters class. Motor gremlins leaped onto Welch's bike in the' first turn, putting him at the back of the pack as [otermediate racer Bill Reagan snapped up the number-two position on his BuJtaco. Reagan raced at the rear wheel of Master-class racer Allard for two laps before he could get around. for the lead in the first Section of track on La p three. Meanwhile, Chris Richardson held on to third, followed by fourth-placed Skippy Miller aboard his Penton. Husky-mounted Michael Snoddy held fifth, while AMA district rep Britt Lambert held down sixth place on his Mako. Reagan, Allard and Richardson began to pull away from tbe rest of the vintage pack as Miller raced alone in third, several seconds in front of Snoddy when the checkered flag came out. The second mota saw Welch on a repaired machine in the holeshot position, chased feverishly by Bob McNamara, Reagan, Richardson and Allard. All stayed close together for two la ps before a little terra firOJa began to distance the riders. Welch never Looked back as he took the checkered flag first, followed by Reagan and McNamara. Welch's first-mota DNF only netted him fourth-place points in the Masters division, while McNamara used his 3-2 for the overall spot. Richardson gathered up a 2-3 for second, with Allard taking third by way of his 1-4 tally. Results VINT BEG: 1. John Pearson (CZ>; 2. Scott Beam. VJNT INT: 1. Bill Reagan (Bul); 2.
