pipe, it came off the cylinder and was
really loud, and it just didn't have the
power to pull last gear."
However, Davis couldn't close the
gap enough, and he pulled into the finisher's chute with Abbott's dust just
clearing in the steady wind.
"It made for a real interesting race,"
the runner-up noted. "Those guys were
riding really good. The dub did a great
job; they did an awesome job. The first
loop was great! I can't believe how nice
a job they did. rt was a lot of fun."
Brown pulled in a short time later for
third overall, third Open, followed by
KTM's Russell Pearson on the first 250.
"I got a good start," Pearson said,
"got like fifth to the bomb and ended up
out there in Ty's dust. Destry and Dan
Richardson got by me on that loop. It
was actually tighter today than usual in
Lucerne. Usually down here, it's like,
'We've got to race in Lucerne again?' It
was actually fun today. My bike was
running awesome, and 1 had a good
day, no problems. 1got back by Richardson and then the last lap I got by Shane
Esposito and ended up fourth overall."
. The only real problem he had was a
broken shark fin, which flailed away,
hammering his rear rotor.
After running in second off the
bomb, Team Green's Esposito ended up
fifth overall, fourth Open on his KX5oo.
"It was a pretty good day," Esposito
said. "I had a good start - I was running
second. I just blew a couple corners. Ty
caught me. Then, when Destry caught
me, I knew I wasn't running as well as I
could be, so I just lEit him by. 1 stayed
there. Then, going out on the second
loop, I wound up getting lost, and that's
where Russ got me. I just pretty much
rode a race to stay steady after that. I
wasn't really happy with the course
markings - some of the things were a Ii ttle off - but I'm not the one marking the
course, so I can understand. They're
marking 80 miles; it must be tough. It's
just one of those things. I'm getting used
to this bike; I'm a little guy on it - that's
the big thing. I've just got to get a little
more upper-body strength so I can
throw it around a little more, but it's
going good."
In the series right now, though,
things are going best for Abbott on his
Team Green/Pro Circuit/ Acerbis/Dunlop/IMS-backed 10<500.
.
"The Kawasaki/Pro Circuit bike just
worked awesome; I was really happy
with the way it worked," he said. "We
just have that thing dialed. 1 feel real
confident with it, Brian's riding really
good with his; Shane, too. Kawasaki's
come a long way in the last year; we've
been working hard, and it's great to see
us finishing up front now. I've been
working really hard at trying to win
some races; I'm really happy with this
year so far. We're leading the Best in the
Desert Silver State Series, and now I'm
leading this series. My goal is to win a
championship this year; that's all I want
to do, and I just hope it works out." CN
