Lampkin started nervously with a terrible three in the second section, but "this proved to be a mere wake-up call. Lampkin stormed around the lap, showing virtually perfect concentration and application to drop just eight marks. Colomer had gone to pieces early in the lap, allowing Japanese Honda ace Takahisa Fujinami to overtake him. "Fujigas" was looking strong, with a lap of 14, as Friexa was putting in a lap of which he could be proud, at 16. With easier sections and the riders now familiar with the terrain, there was none of the previous day's tardiness, and the contenders at the rear of the field had plenty of time to inspect sections and cut possible mistakes to a minimum. Lampkin never let up, and his second lap (of six) was upstaged only slightly by Colomer, who just knew he had to regain second if he was not going to end the weekend with a gaping points gap between himseU and Lampkin, as the Brit was sitting pretty on a maximum 40 championship points on the weekend. In the end, Fujinami dropped off the pace and came under pressure from Friexa and Bilbao as the latter made an impressive finish. Justribo surprisingly dropped to sixth after his stunning opening-day second place. _ Spanish World Trial . L10ret de Mar, Spain Results: March 20-21, 1999 (Round 1 of 10) DA Y ONE: 1. Newton grabs muddy win at Birch Creek Motocross By Jay Hauser DANVILLE, VA, MAR. 14 The opening round of the season at Birch Creek Motorsports' facilities turned into a cold, nasty, rain-plagued event. One big bonus for those who braved the awful conditions was the fact that they were able to nab some very valuable points, since the event was round three of the U.S. Eastern Spring Motocross Series. As conditions worsened, Tri-Oty Yamaha's Chad Newton just seemed to skate over tl,e slippery terrain as he washed out both the 125cc A and 250cc A classes with relative ease. The day's format was cut to one mota, and Newton and the gang had a pretty good track on which to run in the 125cc A race. YZ-mounted Chris Anstead and M.ike Martin gave Newton a run for a while. The early going of the moto saw the trio stay close, but Newton proved to be a superior rider in the wet conditions. Anstead fought (Above left) Chris Anstead (61), Mark Wagner (395), and 125cc B rider Chad Black (327) head out into the mud for the combined 125cc A/125cc B-class moto at the third round of the U.S. Eastern Spring Motocross series, held at Birch Creek MX. (Above) Bob Zing (39) and Bill Keefe (24) race side by side through the infield of Carlsbad Raceway during 250cc Intermediate action. Zing went on to finish third. off Martin for second. Shane Templeton and Mark Wagner rounded out the top five. ewton put in the same muddy performance in the 250cc A-class mota, while Martin and Anstead went at it again;only this time Martin took the runner-up spot. In the slick conditions, it was more than tou~h for the small-wheeled SOcc bikes to get around the track, but a few young kids were whipping it up. KTM-mounted Ryan Smith did not let the tricky conditions shake hun up a bit. Smith reeled off a perfect ride as bikes were stuck and slipping around all over the place. Smith took a well-deserved moto win over Cobra rider Kyle Fitzwater. Smith backed up his SOcc win with a strong ride in the longest moto of the day, the 60cc (7-9) contest. The class was rw1 about the middle of the race schedule, so conditions were pretty bad for most, but local mini ace Brad Haar took an exhausting mota win over the mud man, Smith. Tough young lady Samantha Farr grabbed third. Jarred Atkinson and Melvin Clamp survived the moto to round out the top five. District 13 regular Dustin Canty proved that hard work reaUy does payoff. Despite the bad conditions, Canty took his first overall in the Super Mini class, over Ryan LinviIJe and Tobin Farr. Canty cam'e back to secure a fifth in the competitive Sclloolboy class as well. Clement capitalizes at Carlsbad Motocross By Kirk Chandler CARlSBAD, CA, FEB. 27 Irl a gate full of fierce competitors, D.R. Clement used strong, consistent riding to maneuver his TM250 mto thc lead and take 11", overall victory in the 250cc Irltermediate class at Carlsbad Rnceway. When the gate dropped for moto number one, it was Bob Zing Jr. taking the holeshot, followed by Troy Lee, Bill Keefe and Josh Eder. Keefe was the first to make a move, passing Lee on the back section of the track. As the pack jumped off the ledge, the running order was Zing, Keefe, Lee, Tim Theodore and Clement. Keefe decided to break from the follQw-theleader game and made his pass on Zing at the top of the uphill. Lee, seeing thc urgency to pass Zing, made a gutsy outside pass in Rattlesnake Gulch. The leaders began to pull away from the rest of the pack, gaining a three-second margin over Theodore, who was running fourth in the pack. Things changed drastically when Lee went down hard on the uphill, knocking himself out of the race with a very bent set of handJebars. The battle was on between Keefe a"d Zing for the lead, while simultaneously a battle for third was brewing between Clement and a hardcharging Josh Tupa. Clement eventually took third. - Meanwhile, Zing grabbed a handful of throttle and passed Zing on his way to the first-moto win. Kcefe finished second, followed by Clement and Tupa. When the pack of 250cc riders rocketed their way to the first turn, it was Dan Dilley who grabbed .the holeshot, followed by Zing, Keefe and Clement. Zing wasted little time in passing for the lead, and Keefe foUowed suit. The battle for the top spot continued, with Zing and Keefe going at it tooth iUld nail. Keefe made the pass and was then hounded by Zing until the co.unterpass was made two laps later. Keefe began to tire as Zing started to pull away. Clement and Tupa were at it again, but this time they were attempting to pass Dilley, who was holding up the two competitors. When the white flag came out, the action heated up in a hurry. Zing and the rest of the pack had caught some of the riders from the first gate and were attempting to bypass the lappers. Heading full throttle into the Horseshoe, Zing attempted a risky pass on one of the riders, who had already made his pivot on the corner. Zing plowed right into the unsuspecting rider, sending both riders to the ground with their bikes entangled. As the two riders were separating their bikes, Keefe, Clement and Tupa went allout for the mota win. Oc.ment made the pass on Keefe and took the moto win and overall. Keefe was second, followed by Tupa. Zing was the last rider across the finish line and ended up third on the day. Results 80 NOV: 1. Tyl~ Keefe (Yam); 2. Michael Cleveland (Hon). 125 BEG: I.
