Beatty warrants the win at Barona Oaks MX By Homer Eubanks .. lifE !!Ii IIlii b. .. ~ ~ liii " ... • 8l en C. « 52 RAMONA,CA,MAR7 The first race of the season started off with a big bang at Barona Oaks Raceway. Tim Beatty was the fastest Pro, while Sean Thornton, Billy Laninovich,. Josh Navarro, Trevor Reis and Dakota Garner all earned double class wins. . Tim Beatty topped the 250cc Pro competition, ,,~th Angelo lngrande taking a dose second overall. Beatty controlled the first moto, with lngrande second and Robby.Mueller third. Things changed in the second moto. lngrande took the holeshot, with Beatty and Mueller pressuring his every move. With Mueller keeping Beatty occupied, lngrande was able to pull some breathing room on Beatty. Then, on the fourth lap, Beatty dosed up and stole the mota. Once out front, it looked as if Beatty was headed to a runaway victory. [ngrande, however, got a second wind on the last lap of this eight-lap race and pulled up on Beatty. tngrande had momentum going, but he ran out of laps and had to settle for second, just behind Beatty. Skip Edwards proved to be too much for the other 16 250cc Novice riders. Edwards lost in moto one to Jon Meyers but came back in the second moto for the win and the overall. In round two, Edwards held off Kevin Yost, while Meyers trailed in third. Meyer's 1-3 effort netted second overall. Yost took the third-place trophy, and Kiel Mattsson earned his fourth with a fourth and fifth place. Sean Thomton, riding his RP Racing Yamaha, dominated the 125cc Open class. Thomton mastered both motos, first besting Kevin Yost and then Steven Mann. Mann edged out Yost in the second moto to take second overall. Josh a varro started the year off with double wins in the Supermini contest, but Shaun Connelly served notice that it would 1:>e a long. hard battle for the series' overall championship honors. Navarro took charge of both motos off the gate. In moto one, Josh Navarro had his brother joey hot on his heels for a couple of laps; that was before David Meyers took the spot and tried to close up on josh. Back in the pack, Shaun Connelly left the gate in eighth place and was freight-training his way through the pack. Connelly took the third spot by lap three but could not best the effort of Meyers for second. In the second Supermini moto, Josh Navarro took off and headed for the finish line, but first he had to fend off David Meyers for the first four laps. Before Navarro could get settled in, he began feeling ti,e pressure of Shaun Connelly all the way to the checkered. Cas Swift was a . consistent f lLrth. josh Navarro came back later to capture ti,e 80cc Intermediate trophy as well. Navarro couldn't handle David Meyers in the first moto, but he came back in the second moto, when it counted. Meyer took the second-overall spot but had to trail Cas Swift across in the second moto. Consistency paid off in the field of 19 125cc Novice riders. Brandon Hamlett took top honors after placing fourth in moto one behind Jon Meyers, Chad Clabaugh and Ken johnson. In the second mota, it was seventh-place finisher Pete Scully taking charge out of the gate. Scully had Travis Connelly trailing. followed by Hamlett. Hamlett gobbled up the whoops with a triple and double, leaving Connelly to "hold off james Marries for the third spot. Once the scent of victory got a hold of Hamlett, he charged up on Scully, but Hamlett ran out of laps and had to settl~ for second. Chad Oabaugh took second on the day with his second and fifth showings. Peter Scully earned third mth his 7-1 effort. Also winning through consistent ricling was Ivan Shultz in the 80cc (7-11) division. Shultz took the overall by scoring a pair of deuces. First Shultz followed Brad Masters across; then he failed to match the pace set by Marc Abernathy in the second mota. Abernathy earned the second overall honors after finishing fourth in moto one. Masters got hung up in tu.rn one of the second moto but was able to pass half the field for fifth. Master's 1-5 score earned him third overall. Fourth was Steven Cerda with his 3-4 showing. Trevor Ries and Dakota Gamer set the pace in the Pee Wee divisions. Ries won both the Pee Wee (7-8) Stock and Modified trophies. In the junior Cyde Open·dass, Reis also took second to Cameron Corfman. By taking overalls in both the Pee Wee Stock and Modified classes, Dakota Gar.ner gave notice that he would like to win this season's championship. Result INTRO TO MX: I. Joshua Huerta (Kaw); 2.
