AMA Mid-South Hare Scrambles Series Round 9 Ricketts cashes in By Debbie Allen VANLEER,1N, FEB. 21 had Ricketts was rough and raring to go, and he took his third win of the season in the AMA Mid-South Hare Scrambles Series. Ricketts claimed Vanleer's $700 overall winner's purse, beating out former GNCC and National Hare Scrambles Champion Scott Plessinger and GNCC runner-up Steve Hatch. Ricketts also broke the tie in series points with Blair Bersano at the event. . "1 only fell once, so 1 had a pretty good ride," said Ricketts, who got a S §! -... .c ~ III ~ 60 third-place start. Team Suzuki OffRoad's Hatch got th~ holeshot, and Plessinger followed. "I had a good start and just flowed with Shad and Scott pretty much the first lap," said Hatch. Scott Plessinger made his move on Ha tch just prior to the end of the first lap. Plessinger made a clean pass on Hatch just before the scorer's tent, and Ricketts followed through still in third. The second and third laps saw some changes for Plessinger and Ricketts. Plessinger slid back to third place when Ricketts carnes out of the woods in first. Hatch continued to race in second place throughout the first three laps. "1 think 1 got the lead halfway through' the second lap," said Ricketts, "and 1 kept it for a lap and a half. After the third lap, Steve got around me. He was in the lead for the fourth lap, but 1 got around him when he stopped for gas. After that, 1 never saw him again, because 1didn't have to get gas." Hatch's account, of. the race was a little different. "My elbow hit a tree and the next two laps 1 crashed on two tree roots," said Hatch. "I made a few more mistakes, my hands went numb, and 1 didn't get to finish therac~, but 1did get to practice with the bike more." Which is exactly why Hatch and Plessinger were at the event to begin with. . Both riders were prepping new bikes for the upcoming GNCC series. On lap four, Hatch was still in the lead, but he dropped back to second place on lap five, and that was all he wrote: He left the track, leaving Shad Ricketts in first place and Plessinger in second. Blair Bersano circled the scoring tent in third. Bersano also had his share of problems, as his goggles kept fogging. He worked his way up lap by lap. from seventh off the start to third overall. Bersano was followed by Scott McLaughlin and John Maschino, who slid his 1M machine in to finish fifth. _ Mid-South Winter Hare Scrambles Series Vanleer, Tennessee Results: February 21, 1999 (Round 9) O/A: L Shad Ricketts (Yam); 2.
