Harley-Davidson team manager Steve Scheibe is hoping Scott Russell can bring Daytona glory back to Harley-Davidson. Mr. Daytona and the VR Many thanks for the insightful interview with Scott Russell concerning the Daytona 200 Gssue #7, February 24). Of the many points he raised, one of the mos"! interesting was his perspective on the lack of spectator involvement. It never ceases to amaze me how few people actually attend - or even know about the races. In fact, the track is the place to go if you dislike Bike Week crowds. With Russell riding a Harley, you would think that Harley-Davidson, Daytona International Speedway and the local chamber of commerce would do a whole lot more promoting of the race to the 500,000-plus visitors. Of those who do attend, few have a clue as to what's happening on the track. Last year, Richard Chambers did an excellent job trying to build excitement when Pascal Picotte had the Harley running in front of the pack. Unfortunately, threequarters of the grandstand couldn't identify him. I read with interest - and received a few phone calls from friends about it - the letter from Brian Smyth in which he said that "20 years ago I could hear and understand every word that Larry Huffman was saying..." Since I was forced out of supercross announcing by the old Mickey Thompson Entertainment Group in 1989, I've only announced two supercrosses and have attended none. I guess it's too)ate now, but a perfect slogan could be placed in Harley publications and in bars throughout Daytona, simply repeating your front-page headline: Come for the beach... stay for the races. Maybe next year - it sure would be nice to have more fans in the grandstand. Youngblood and the AMA It was with great dismay that I learned that Ed Youngblood has resigned as the president of the AMA. In his 28 years of service to the motorcycling public, Ed has established himself as a motorcycle leader and visionary both in this country and internationally. As a member of the AMA's congress, I have had the opportunity to work with him on several occasions. I have found Ed to be a person who was able to look at a situation from 'another person's point of view as well as his own, a person who followed a task through to its completion, and a person who always returned phone calls (a major feat in itself). Although he and I did not always agree, we would agree to disagree and'he was always a gentleman. I think that the AMA's board of trustees is going to have a very difficult time finding.someone of Ed's caliber to replace him. I would like to take this time to pub· licly' thank him for all the good things he has done for my sport. Thank you, Ed. Bill Haas billhaas@earthlink.net
