Spencer HOLLISTER, CA, JAN. 6 Senior A rider john Haaker and his YZ400 conquered the elements and nearly 300 other riders to win the Valentine Heart On Hare Scrambles at Hollister Hills prior to the running of the opening round of the AMA National Hare Scrambles series. Passing Phil Douglas on the first of six laps, Haaker, a former AA rider, turned some very consistent times on the tough l1-mile course. "1 got an okay start and came up on Phil (Douglas), and he was wiggling around and I got by him, and that was pretty much it," said Haaker. "It was a tough, long course, but it was great." Bruce Rust had a hard time on the starting line, but he pushed forward to take second while Eddie Diaz dosed the distance between himseU and Rust on the last lap to claim a close tllird. Former flat-track ace Kenny Netto took fourth in just his first try in the cross country scene, while former champion Duane Scott rounded out the top five. Sixth went to Wayne Hatch, followed by Dave Wells, Perry Sherman, Charlie Marshall and Ed' Lix. Super Senior A rider Eddie Edgyed was 12th overall alter the first lifp, leading his class, but in tlle end Edgyed could only muster a fifth, as Fred Sumrall topped the division over Louie Marshall. Ron Knarr led the first three laps of the Senior B class, but it was Cliff Bagot who cut into the lap times and passed Bagot on lap four. Bagot held on to second as Frank Scancarello finished third, allead of Rod Spencer. Fred Cameron won the Super Senior B class over Jim Counts, passing Joe Stancato on lap three, while Bruce Kelly, after a l2-year layoff, went from sixth in class to finish third. Billy jurevich led only the first lap of the 200cc division, with Tommy Jean winning over Tom Loren and Todd Wiederhold. Greg Ghione and Wayne Ryan battled back and forth for 250cc C honors, with Ryan coming away the winner. Mark Denney took third over Lucas Odorn, who was ninth on the first lap and took two extra positions on the last lap for fourth. Heather Wagner-jauregg led all laps of the Women's class, beating Jessica Ghione and Adrienne Nicholson. Ryan Chamberlin was first in the Formula 100 class. josh Devonshire led the first lap, but it was family members Ryan and Bob Devonshire taking second and third. Results 0/ A: 1. John Haakcr; 2.
