Australian road racer Damon Buckmaster is recuperating at his new home in Chino Hills, California, following his back injury from a motocross accident on February 7 in which he broke one vertebra and compressed two others. Buckmaster, who is in a halo to support his broken neck, suffered no damage to his spinal cord and is hoping to be back in action later this year. "1 can walk around and stuff," Buckmaster said on Thursday, December 18. "I'm really mobile - a lot more than I expected to be. J feel really good about everything, considering what could haye happened. The guys at Chaparral and .Suzuki have been really supportive. I don't intend on going home (to Australia). I can heal as quick here as I could at home. It's just one of those things - at least I wasn't mucking about on a skateboard or something. I use the motocross bikes as a way to train for my road racing, and that's what I was doing. I can't be bummed too much. I'll be right. I just need a month or two to take it easy and heal." Buckmaster was riding with Yoshimura Suzuki's Mat Mladin when he crashed in some whoops. "it was a really rough track," Buckmaster said. '1 hit a big bump and the seat hit me and kicked me up and over the bars." Buckmaster's fiancee and her brother are staying with him during his rehab.• The third annual Coupe Classic motocross wiJJ be held on March 7 at the E Street Bridge sand track in Marysville, California. Schrock owned Aircone High-Performance Exhaust Systems in Henderson, Nevada. Motocrosser Kaylom Young of Lubbock, Texas, suffered a broken neck in a motorcycle accident on December 6, 1998, that has left him paralyzed from the neck down. A fund has been established to help raise money for Young, who broke the C5 vertebra in his neck, and a special-edItion Kaylom Young umber 19 T-shirt is bei ng sold through West Texas motorcycle shops and businesses for $25. A Kaylom Young benefit will be hosted by former AMA Grand ational Champion (and Lubbock native) Bubba Shobert at the South Plains Fairgrounds in Lubbock on April 10. According to a press release issued by Team Obsolete, the Dutch IT in Assen, Holland, site of the Dutch round of the World Championship Road Race Series, has invited Team Obsolete Promotions to produce a round of the Trans Atlantic Match Races for historic bikes. The race will be held over two days, the Thursday (June 24) prior to the Dutch Grand Prix and the Saturday (June 26) immediately following the Dutch GP. According to Team Obsolete owner Rob Iannucci, Daytona International Speedway's Jim France and the AMA's Bill Amick helped arrange a solution to the mess involving Team Obsolete-backed riders and AHRMA. AHRMA had originally turned down any entries to the Daytona event by riders who were entered with Team Obsolete sponsorship, due to several lawsuits involving Iannucci and AHRMA. All eight entries have now been accepted. AHRMA also issued a press release regarding the situation. "At the reque t of the American Motorcyclist Association, the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association will permit Team Obsolete-sponsored riders to compt>te during AHRMA's March 1-2 Classic Days at Daytona International Speedway," the release states. "After that, however, the vintage-racing organization intends to enforce its recent board of trustees' decision not to accept race entries from Team Obsolete." AHRMA is engaged in ongoing legal action with Team Obsolete and its owner, Rob Iannucci, over the use of a trademark owned by AHRMA, the release goes on to say. "In addition to forma lIy deciding to no longer do business with Team Obsolete, AHRMA trustees rejected Iannucci's application for renewal and revoked his membership." Former MY Agusta team rider Franco Bonera will ride an MY Agusta along with Team Obsolete's Dave Roper at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, March 1-2, according to Team Obsolete. Italian road racer Doriano Romboni was forced to cancel his scheduled test session at the Misano circuit in Italy, February 20-21, because his Ducati Superbikes weren't ready, according to Cycle News contributor Paolo Gozzi. "The bike are still under construction in the Ducati's Reparto Corse," Romboni said. "I searched for a spare bike just for training because I had never tested a four-stroke machine before, but I wa unable to find one. 0 problem. I will begin testing on March 9-11 at Misano, together with (Carl) Fogarty, (Troy) Corser and many other factory teams. I will have just three days of testing before my first race in World Superbike at Kyalami. I know that all the riders corning from GP, like (Pier-Francesco) Chili and (John) Kocinski, were really fast immediately when they arrived on uperbikes, because I think that to ride it can be easier than a 250 or a 500 GP machine. We will see. I will begin an exciting ad venture and I think I can stay with the top riders." A large contingent of British riders racing under the Forgotten Racing Club banner are coming to Daytona to compete in various AHRMA races, March 12, at the Speedway. A total of 15 rider will comprise the team, with five of those - Ron Fyson, John Mo ey, John Weedon, Geoff McMullan and Mike Silvester - scheduled to compete in the International Lightweight lOOk on Sunday, March 7. The five will be aboard 1990 Yamaha T225Os. "Ed Youngblood guided this Association for the past 18 years," AMA board of trustees chairman ·Carl Reynolds stated in an AMA press release on February 19. "Now we're faced with the task of finding a visionary leader to take th Association into the next millennium. Locating the right person for the job could take some time, but]' m confident the Association is in capable hands during the transition to new leadership." Formula USA has announced two events for the 1999 season. Formula USA will race at Portland International Raceway in Portland, Oregon, July 17-18, and at Pocono International Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania, August 27-28.
