"I really thought Doug, being a charger, was going to catch me halfway through," Healey added. "And we just stayed the same the whole race. It was really a good race for me. 1was.happy." "My hat's off to Mike Healey," Dubach said. "He rode a great race. He got one or two guys; he was behind early and made a good gap. It was really hard to catch up, especially when you don't see the guy ... So 1 was a little lost when 1 got into second, but 1 tried to keep my head down and hope for the best. Second's not bad. I'm happy; for a part~tirne racer, I'm happy. I'll just have to come back here next week in the same stadium and put it in that main event for the 250s. That would make me really happy." After getting passed by Dubach, Meyer held his ground in Hurd, though Gurnee did come up to challenge him briefly. "1 just kind of stayed there in third, and Gurnee was going pretty good," Meyer said. "He was going real fast, and he put a little pressure on me for a minute. 1 was just riding too tense. 1 thought, 'I've got to calm down and watch Dubach and stay as close as 1 can.' And. 1 started. to pull away again and just kind of stayed with Dubach. The race was over by then. It was intense." As for Walters, the race didn't go as he'd envisioned, but he wasn't too disappointed with his ride in only his second race back after suffering a punctured lung and cracked ribs in December. "1 could see 1 was reeling the leaders in," Walters aid. "['m disappointed, but I'm happy with the way [ rode. 1 got a' little more confidence, 1 think, just because [ knew [ was reeling them in. 1 know if 1 get a start, I can do it." But no one was happier than Healey, who exclaimed, "It feels good; it's a eN good start for the new year." Edison International Field Anaheim, California Results: January 30, 1999 (Round 4) MAIN: 1.
