Supercross After passing Schnell, Brandes was now in control of fifth. Johnson forged on and, on the 10th lap, tripled over the fading Pingree for third, and Brandes soon followed. However, a lapped rider slowed Brandes' progress a few laps later, and Pingree repassed his Suzuki teammate over the triple. With three laps remaining, Ramsey held a six-second advantage over Lytle; then came the hard-charging Johnson. Pingree still held fourth. Then Brandes got out of hap and ghost-rode hi RM125 over the triple, losing several positions. "There was a rut that I got sideways on, and it kicked the back end up, and then both of my feet were on the left side of the bike," Brandes explained of the odd crash. "Instead of riding that one out, I just let it go." Ramsey relaxed the final lap and Lytle closed the gap, but it was too little, too late, as Ramsey styled to his third straight victory of the year. "Every time feels like the first time," an ecstatic Ramsey said of the win. "The first part of the race is always chaotic, and I just tried to stay smooth and be smart. Once 1 got out front, 1 dug down to get a little lead a 1 could relax later. It went pretty mooth." Lytle finished a strong second, while Johnson finished a career-best third. ''It took me a couple of laps to get by Pingree; then Ramsey came up and 1 started getting a little tense," Lytle said of hi second-place ride. "After he (Ramsey) passed me, I just tried to hang in there for second and maybe get him back, but he wa going good." "1 got a good tart and my Yamaha felt great the whole time," said a proud ' Johnson. 'Tve been riding and training a lot on supercross-type tracks, and things are going good." Pingree held on for fourth, in front of Schnell, who usually does well at Anaheim. Clark finished sixth after battling throughout rna t of the race with his friend Wheeler, who ended up seventh. Isaiah Johnson's cousin Keith Johnson finished eighth, while a bummed Brandes recovered from his fall in nintll. _ Edison International Field Anaheim, California February 6, 1999 (Round 5 of 8) 125 HEAT 1 (6 laps, 1-9 transfer to main): 1.
