Events Christmas comes early at Silver City Motocross By Craig Cole STERLING, KS, DEC. 13 The fourth annual KORR Christmas race held at the Silver City MX park in Sterling, Kansas, provided rid,ers a chance to enjoy some racing where points did not matter, but also an opportunity to help one of their own. Longtime series competitor Richard Miller, who was seriously injured in a racing accident, was presented with more Ihan $1000 raised through sign-up fees and the sale of items donated by Wichita's K and N Motorcycles and Nichols Honda and Suzuki. Points or no poi.nts, Nick Metcal1 and Brandon Lacey meant business in the 250ec Pro race, as the two riders went head to head in both motos. Metcalf put in the finest performance, coming from behind to win both motos. Yamaha-mounted Lacey actually got the holeshot in moto one, with Matt Smith, Rick Cotten and Steve Herschell in tow. YZ-mounted Marc Gifford and Suzuki-mounted Metcalf started the race toward the rear, but neither would stay there long. By the end of lap one, Gifford had worked 'his way up to second, behind Lacey, while Metcalf was battling Smith for third. HerscheU and Cotten ran fifth and sixth. Metcalf was running behind Lacey at the dose of lap two, with Smith stiU in third. Gifford had dropped to fourth, but he moved back up in the running order \;Vhen Smith crashed on the far side of the lake. A better run through the sand whoops put Metcalf in the lead, ahead of Lacey, but Lacey reclaimed the lead at the white flag. On the final lap, Metcalf went back up front, and he finished the moto there. Lacey came across second, with Gifford, Herschell and Cotten rounding out the top five. Lacey was again best off the gate, while Smith and Hersd, ell gave chase at the start of moto two. Metcalf worked his way to second going through the whoops, and he was pressur ing Lacey for first as lap one was completed. The M two front-runners ran bar to bar throughout ~ ca ::::I C ca ..., 42 most of the next two laps, with Herschell, Cotten and Smith fighting over third. As the laps were winding down, Metcalf was able to make his move - again through the whoops· and take the lead. When the last lap began, Metcalf was in front and Lacey was funning a strong second. After getting around Herschell for third, Cotton began a charge for second. Metcalf used the last lap to extend his lead, and he finished well ahead of Lacey, who barely edged out Cotton. Herschell finished fourth and Smith settled for fifth. Frank Seu Jr. won moto one "f the 2SOcc C class after m.:lking a last-lap pass on Billy Brines, who had held the point most of the way. Brad Brungardt finished third. Brines took the holeshot in moto two, with Brungardt dose behind in second. Sell had just taken the third spot when he crashed hard in the whoops. By the time he was able to get his bike refired, he was at the tail end of the pack. Sell's bi.ke died several times during the rest of the race, ruining his chances for the overall. Brungard t passed Brines to ta ke over the lead on the second lap and then carried that momentum to the win and the overall. Brines finished second in the moto, with Peter Stevens third.
