Up front, Pro Valve-backed Lovett's lead
seemed insurmountable. Fourth-placed Contreras had other ideas, however, and he turned
up the heat and chopped away at Lovett's lead.
Contreras sliced through Jones and Jackson and
set his sights on Lovett. With the laps winding
down, Contreras Tan down Lovett and was
searching for a way past. Contreras' relentless
pressure made Lovett nervous, causing him to
stall his machine in a turn. Contreras capitalized
on Lovett's mistake to take Ule lead and the victory. Lovett was able to get going again and take
second, with Jones claiming third.
In moto two, Jackson's reaction times were
fastest, and he claimed the holeshot down the
fourth-gear straightaway. Jones, Lovett, Tim
Farley and Brian Thienes freight-trained behind.
At the end of lap one, Lovett was in the lead,
with Jackson in second. Contreras hesitated off
the gate and found himself midpack. Once
again, Lovett built a comfortable lead and was in
controL
The man on the move, however, was RMmounted Thienes, who passed both Jones and
Jackson, taking th~ second spot. Not to be outdone, YZ-mounted Con.treras put on a remarkable dlarge to the front of the pack.
With the laps winding down, Lovett was
fi.rmly in first, with Contreras iJ1 second and
jones°in third.l.ovett's lead was not to be, as he
landed on a lapper. Lovett had no time to react
and hit the dirt himself. Contreras missed the
pileup and took the lead. Amazingly, Lovett was
able to remount in second, but one lap later he
spun out in a tum, allowing Jones to take sec·
and. This time, Lovett was not so fortunate, and
he finished 10th.
Rounding out the top three with a consistent
ride was Jackson. Contreras' evasive maneuver
allowed him to take the checkers for the overall
victory. Jones' 3-2 was good .enough to take second overall, with Jackson landblg third.

Riker rules again
By Neal R. Thomas
MILTON, FL, NOV. 21
Bob Riker ruled over a talented pack of Vet B
250cc riders at the West Aorida MX Park in Milton. Meanwhile, the 125cc Money" class was
topped by John Melton, who used consistent, fast
riding to pull off a surprising overall victory.
Track owner Craig Woolard clearly horsepowered his way to the holes hot aboard his
KX500 in the first Vet B mota. He was closely
followed by Roger Thayer, the lone 250cc B
rider, Bob Riker, and Ricky Steverson.
Woolard's lead was cut down to nothing by the
second tunl when Riker reeled him in ,U1d tried
to rail around the outside. As they motored
down the next straight, Woolard's SOOcc put on
a brute display of power and left his 250cc rlva].,
wheezing in his roost.
This scenario repeated itself for several laps
as Riker tried alternate lines to try to get around
Woolard. The battle up front slowed the pace
enough for the riders behind to catch up and
form a string of evenly matched riders, all looking for a place to pass each other.
Positions went unchanged until Woolard
became slightly tired and overshot a berm, let. ting several riders by. Thayer zapped Riker in a
turn and moved into the lead. Thayer motored
away to beat Riker to the finish line. The finiSh
earned Thayer the first 250cc B spot and Riker
the first Vet B position. John Hanford and Lee
Johnson crossed the finish line third and
fourth.
The second Vet B moto looked very similar
to the' first, with Woolard powering away to a
big holeshot and fee
