Costanzo got around Dunham for the second-place trophy with a 3-2 effort. Bryan Lamborn and justin Eide swapped the 250cc Novice first-moto lead back and forth before Eide got the upper hand for the win. Rob Hall put the move on Lamborn for second place on the white-flag lap and almost caught Eide at the checkers. Eide and Hall fought over the top spot throughout moto two, with Eide proving to be just slightly faster. Desert racer joey Lanza literally stuffed his ATK under Hall on the last lap to steal second place. Hall's 2-3 rides topped Lanza's 4-3 for second on the day. Results P/W BEG: I. Gerber good at Octoberfest Motocross By Jim & Valerie Enos TRACY, CA, DEC. 5 PCP Yamaha/Race Tech/FMF-backed jeremiah Gerber rode two good motos and turned a 3-2 score il1to an overall win of the 125cc Beginner dass at round four of the 1998 AMP/GFt Octoberfest Gold Cup Series. With 16 125ee Beginners on the gate, the race to the first turn was a dogfight. Taking the holeshot was Yamaha-mounted Don Bailey, who was followed by Gerber, Greg Center, Chad Stephens and Govind Rae. Center grabbed the lead when he skied over a tabletop jump. The leap was all Center needed to open up a commanding lead over Bailey and the rest of the field. Both Stephens and Rat: went down in the back section of the track, allowing Gerber to move into third. josh Weatherly quietly made his way up and placed his Suzuki in fourth. Weatherly began pressuring Gerber for third while Center continued to hold a solid lead ahead of Bailey. As the white flag came out, a battle for fifth between James Wright and Mike Starkweather developed, with Wright taking every inside line he could find to avoid a pass by Starkweather. In the end, Wright's defense worked: Starkweather ran out of time. The checkered flag waved for Center, followed by Bailey, Gerber, Weatherly and Wright. Moto two saw Gerber grab the hoJeshol, followed by Stephens, Wright, justin McReynold and Starkweather. McReynold cross-rutted, giving up fourth to Starkweatl,.r, while Gerber got pressure from Stephens up front. Stephens hounded Gerber and finally made the pass on the second uphill section. With moto~one winner Center stuck back in the pack, Gerber simply began to ride smoothly and made as few mistakes as possible. Stephens and his Yamaha checked out as he opened a sizable lead. Back in the field, Starkweather put on a d'arge and moved his way up to third with a slick inside move on Wright. Bailey also made a pass on Wright, outjumping him on the downhill double to take over fourtl,. When the checkered flag came out, Stephens took the win, fol- 60 F/T: 1. Ruben Hernandez (Kaw); 2.
