First-mote actio n in the 125cc Novice class saw Justin Acker take the win , followed by Nick Cali and Chad Frank. Acker could only manage a fifth-pla ce showing in the second moto, which dropped him to third overall beh ind the 2-1 of Cali and the 3-2 of Frank. Results P/W STJ( (~): 1. Kenn y Caverhill was the gu y to beat in the 80ee Beginner class at the opening round of sse Racing's Th ousan d Oaks Kawasaki Winter Warm· s Up Series, held at the Hu ngry Valley Motocross Track. Caverhill set the tone for the day by jumping ou t to the ea rly first-mote lead over Bren t Faw cett -and Brian Brou ssard Jr. Fawcett dogged Caverhill th ro ug ho ut the mo to bu t was unable to find a way around, and he wou ld hav e to settle for the run ner- up pos ition . Justin Hiliger put the mov e on Broussard for th ird just past th e halfwa y po int; then he go t a little breathin g room when Broussard went d own on the last lap. Broussard was quick ly u p and ru nning to sa lvage fourth, in front of Taylor Whittingham and Zach Reese. Reese ree led off th e sec ond- mo to hol esho t aboard his RM BO to lead Caverhill, Fawcett and Bro ussa rd . By the sta rt of lap two, Caverhill was r u n n ing o u t fro n t, w it h Brous sard ge tting a round both Fa w cett a nd Reese to hold down second place. Brou ssard closed in on Caverh iU, but Caverhill upped the pace to hold him off for th e well-deserved sweep of th e cla ss . Fawcett came across for a close th ird , which was good e no ug h to to p Broussard by a single point for .the second-place trophy. In doing so, Nelson had to win the "first-ro un d title bout" between himself and contende r Todd Mitchell. Ne lson and Mitchell a ppa re nt ly go t close o n the start, igniting a spark in bo th riders. The two pushed and sho ved each ot her for the first half of the eight-lap moto before Ne lson cou ld pull some breathing room over Mitche ll. In the second moto, Nelson decided early on not to ge t around Mitchell and hammered out a comforta ble lead right out of the gate.
