Mid \ o z 26 B1NGHA MTON,NY,OCT.18 jim joy used great starts and grea t riding to take home the overa ll win in the extremely competi tive 12Sec Amateur class a t the lates t round of District 3 motocros s a t the Broome-Tioga Sports Center, Ju st over 200 rid ers sho wed up to race 25 classes on a beautiful fall d ay. Track promoter Tom Hurd did a grea t job of preparing the tra ck for the season-ending even t. joy blasted to the fron t of the pack in the first m oto a nd nev er looked back. Trailing Joy thro ugh the first tum and the Pro National finishline double were track promoter Tom Hurd (who was riding a 125cc machin e for the first time in year s), Pau l Peck, Mike Ching an d jason Pott er. When the lead ers emerged from the front supe rcross section of the race course, Potter lk1dmoved up to fourth, dropping Ching to fifth. On lap two, Potter go t by I'c'Ck for th ird , dropping Peck to fourth. By the third lap, joy was out front by eight St.:ocond s. Potter began putting pressure on Hurd for second by lap four . jason Gelber moved into fourth. joy's lead increased 10 13 seconds by the last lap . POller passed Hurd for second just after takin g the wh ite flag. Hurd charged hard to try to regain seco nd , but Pott er, realizing Hurd was right on go t on the gas and pu t some dis tance betw een them. Wh"" the checke red flag lllm , flew, it was joy taking the moto win , followed by Pot ter, Hurd, Chin g and C}, Talarski. jeff Ingersoll nailed the ho leshot in the second 12See Amateur m ote . Trailing him were Joy, Matth ew Hibba rd , Hunt an d Tra m pa s Henr y . Wh en th e leaders ca me off th e front section of the cou rse.In ge rso ll still had the lead, joy was seco nd , Hunt ha d moved up to thi rd , Hibbard had d rop ped to fourth and Potter ha d moved u p to fifth. On lap two, the top th ree remained the same, bu t Potter got a roun d Hibbard for fourt h. Halfw ay th rou gh lap tw o, a t th e tunnel ju mp , Mike Ayen passed Hibbard for fifth. joy passed Ingersoll for the lead just a fter the big off-camber d ouble on the back hill of the course. On lap three, Ayen ma de the pass on Potter for fourth and then crashed, dropping out of the top five. Potter was now fourth and Hib bard fifth. Hunt blew by Ingersoll for secon d on the off-cambe r doubl e on the back hill. Hunt passed joy for the lead on the off-camber doubl e bu t crashed hard on the land ing and rem ounted abo ut mid pack. Hurricane Hills Motocross stars Spangler By J im Sanderson CUFFORD PA, OCT.25 , Da m ie n Plo tts and Low ell Spangler took top honors in the 12Sec Expert and 50cc (7-8) classes , resp ectively, at the final motocross of the 1998 seaso n a nd th e 16th a n n u a l Santich C ycl es Gra nd Prix of Motocro ss at the Hurricane Hills Sports Center. Just over 350 riders came ou t to race 27 classes. Jason Kear na iled th e h ol ~s h ot in the first 125cc Expert m oto. Plotts had the lea d by th e end of the technical whoop section, while Kear held second , Alex Blackwell third, Mark Pillion fourth and Paul Bruno fifth. Plotts had a 13-se<:- ond lead by the end of lap tw o and went on to win by more than 20 seconds. Rounding ou t the top five we re Kear, Blackwell, Pillion and Bruno. Blackwell gra bbed th e holesh ot in mot o two, with Plott s, Kear, Bruno an d Pillion in tow . Pillion got by Bruno for fourth in the wh oop section. Plotts had th e lead by th e three-quarter ma rk of lap one, Kear was seco nd , Pillion now had third, Bruno fo urth a nd Bla ck w ell fifth . Blackwell passed Brun o for fou rth in the wh oop section at th e end of lap M ·O. Pillion we nt down or had mechanical problems near the end of the moto an d di d not finis h, Plot ts took th e moto win with be tter tha n 20 seconds in ha nd. Roundng ou t the lop five were Kear, Blackwell, Brun o and Darrell Ada ms. Spangle r got th e holeshot in the first 50cc (78) class moto aod never looked back. Marshall Hurd, Ryan Blizza rd and Rob Martinchio gave chase. When the top five em erged from the technical Hurrican e Hills whoo p sectio n, they were now Spa ngler, Hu rd , jord an Mann, Blizzard and Marti nchi o. Ne ar the end of the first lap, at the sm a ll s tep -u p d ouble at th e ba ck of th e rac e co u rse , Spa ng ler led, followed by Hurd, Bliz7sard . Martinchi o and zachary Whitmore. Whi tmor e passed Martinchio for fourth just after the s ma ll ste p-u p, d ropping him to fifth . Mann passed Martinchio for fif th on la p three, but Martinchio had fifth back by the last lap . When the chec kered flag fell , Span gler took th e w in over Hurd, Man n, Whitmore and Martinchio. Spangler managed to grab the second-mete holes hot, an d trailing him th rou gh the first tum were Hurd, Blizza rd , Martinc hio a nd Ma nn. Mann and Whi tmo re had moved up to third and fourth, d ropping .Martinchio to fifth by the end of lap two . Spangler took the checkers with a big margin over Hurd, Mann, Whitmore and Martinem o.
