Moates dusts REM
Glen Helen Motocross
By Ro cky Hash
SAN BERNARDINO, CA. OCT. 25
Intend ing to use the race as a tuneup for the
White Brothers Vet World Championships,
Marty Moates came -out to Racing Enterprises
Motosports' weekly Saturday Motocross at Glen
Helen Raceway Park, where he posted two convincing moto wins en route to his overall victory
in the Over 40 Ma sters cla ss.
•
Wh en the first moto got under wa y, it wa s
Moates gra bbing the holes hot o n his po te n t
YZ400F thu mper. Rich Elerst edt managed to
sneak his YZl25 int o the second spot, whi le
Kawasaki pi lot Marc Crosby held down th ird .
Th e fourth positio n was occu pied b y Geo rge
Koh ler, a nd Wh ite Brot hers' Tom Wh ite filled
ou t the top five . Over the next few laps, Moates
a nd Eiers ted t began to sepa rate the mselves from
the rest of the pack as the tw o former nationa l
heroe s went at it tooth and nail for the moto
win. Crosby, meanwhile, sa t co m fo r ta b ly in
third, while Koh ler still held fou rth. Yamaha
rider Willi e Ama radio moved up to take o ver
the fifth spo t.
.
As the mota wore on , Elerstedt was unable
to cut into Moates' advantage, as the hilly, natural-terrain course seemed to favor Moates' big
Yamaha four-stroke. Back in th e pa ck , Crosby
stepped o ff his mach ine jus t after the halfway
point and tu rned the third slot over to Kohler.
Ama radio too k over the fou rt h positio n, wh ile
White rec laimed fifth. When the checkers came
out at the end of mot a o ne, it was Moat es w ho
was first to the line, so me three seco nds in fron t
of Eierstedt, w ho finished second . Hon da rider
Kohler fin ished up in third.
At the start of mota two, it was again Moa tes
snagging th e h o le shot. Yamaha rid e r Jim
Domann, w ho was involved in a first-tu m pil eup in the finot moto, occupied the seco nd position. Honda rider Kohler wa s in th ird, w hil e
Ama radio put his Yamaha thumper in fourth.
Eiers tedt carne around to co m p lete lap one in
the fifth s p o t a ft e r gating po orly. Out front,
Moates maintained his five--bike--Ie
ngth lead on
Domann in second. In this moto, Moates seemed
unab le to get away from Domann, as the tv:o
rid ers w e re e q u a ll y m a tch e d on id en t ica l
thumpers.
Mea n wh ile, Eiers tedt was th e man on the
move. The Yama ha ride r appeared to be trying
to ride the whe'els off of his "little" 125, and by
th e time the two-la p signa l was given, he had
moved up to occupy the th ird spot.
Over the ne xt two la p s, Moa tes remained
s teady a nd - a s in the first moto - when th e
checkered flag carne out, he was the first to see
it . Domann finished up a close seco nd , while
Eierstedt rounded ou t the top three. On the day,
it was Moates taking the overall Y by virtue of
,:in
his perfect 1-1 moto finishes. Eiers tedt was next
best, as his 2-3 sco res ea rned him seco nd overall.
Domann, with h is strong ri d e in the second
mo to, finis hed up in third af ter posting 6-2 finishes on the day.

In the second moto, Ryan again had the lead

In the fir s t mo to of th e Senio r Mini class,

In the second moto, Games gra bbed the lead

Roberts came ba ck in the 80cc D cla ss to w in
both motos and take the overall.
C rashes played a big pa rt in the outcome of
the 60cc (7-9) class. In the first moto, Christopher
Newton too k the early lead until he cased a double jum p a nd cras hed hard . Jordan Daniels and
Jos h T rive tte pa ssed New ton whil e he was
down. Newton was able to get back in the race,
but he was a la p down by th is time. Danie ls took
the win, wi th Trivette in seco nd and N ewton
pu lling down third.
In the seco nd moto, Newton aga in took the
early lead , followed by Daniels a nd Trivettt.>.

AMP crew, in an effort to kee p th e rid ers

mu st no table change being a tricky litt le "m ini

made for a great da y of racing.
Moto one s ta r te d off with Bill y [urevich.
g ra bbin g the hol es hot , with Sea n Drapinski,
Craig Humphrey, Loredo and Jim m ie Pierce in
tow. [urevich, who rece ntly made the swi tch to a

had developed a little cushion, and Hum p hrey,
now in third, appeared to be a little spent.
Meanwhile, Lored o tried his best to red in
