Mem orial trac k sect ion to complete the firs t lap of the 45-minute race, it was Smith wit h a wh opping Itl-second lead over Jeff Vers eput, who had made his way around Eide for second place. Pu lling away from th e fie ld a t th e rat e of three seco nds pe r lap , it wa s Smith's race to lose, bu t the Whit e Broth ers/Sintsalo /Motul-backed YZI25 rider didn't put a wheel wron g and greeted the che ckers first with a trem endous lead .
