Mem orial trac k sect ion to complete the firs t lap of the 45-minute race, it was Smith wit h a wh opping Itl-second lead over Jeff Vers eput, who had made his way around Eide for second place. Pu lling away from th e fie ld a t th e rat e of three seco nds pe r lap , it wa s Smith's race to lose, bu t the Whit e Broth ers/Sintsalo /Motul-backed YZI25 rider didn't put a wheel wron g and greeted the che ckers first with a trem endous lead . Epper wor ked up to cha llenge Versepu t for th e runner-up position at th e 20~minut e mark o f th e ra ce , bu t a so il sa m p le by Ep per let Versepu t continue on un contest ed for th e sec on d- place trophy.
