Barr looked the most agg ress ive and the most cons istent at th e same tim e. He rod e ha rd er in the turns an d was somewhat fearless on the jumps. In any case, he qu ickly moved in to the lead , with McCoy in to w . Th e y bo th passed Hel ms, who had a few problem s wi th a sandy tu rn . an d then th e y passe d westwood, who looked very smoo th an d fast on the stra ights but sort of tip toed th rou gh the tu rns . Barr bro ke out of the pack and buil t up a d emoralizing lead that d looked bad for second-place McCoy. Although McCoy took a little more time to find his pace. he really turn ed it up before the race was over. In the mea ntime, a serious strugg le for third was unde r way bet ween Westwood, Helm s a nd J0"Y Highfill. A start-stra ight miscue pu t Highfill on the gro und a nd wa y behin d . Ne vertheless, he motored up through the pack qu ickly to join the race. The checkers fell first on BaIT, who was fo l1 <1 by McCoy. They had a comfor table lead 0w.' over the res t of the pack, but the contest for third throu gh fifth could hav e turned out a ny number of wa y s. Conklin perfect at Leisure Time GP By Don Browning MEDARYVILLE IN,OCT. 18 , Even though it rained the night before the race, the tra ck was pe rfect on Sun day morning, and it m ad e fo r a no th e r p e rf ec t da y o f ra ci ng a t Leisure Time, as Robbie Conklin claimed backto-back wins for th e overa ll victo ry in the 80cc Junior class. Conklin's win continued a perfect series , as he has now won all six mot e s in th e Fam ily Express/ Noble Romans Fall Series , Due to the class size, the 80cc Jun ior and 80cc Senior classes were ru n toget her but scored sepa ra te ly . Wh en th e ga te dro p p ed , Co n kli n , aboa rd his Suzuki, gated first a nd cla imed the lead, ahead of Senio r-class rider Ben Lech tanski. They we re follo wed by Ryan Ca rmicha el a nd Steven Va lu tis. Th e fo u r ri d e rs pulled a wa y from the rest of the pack and gave the spectators a th rill as they co nti nued to clear the 6O-foot double la p after lap. Wh en th e checke rs came ou t, Co n kli n was fi rs t overa ll a nd fir st 80cc Junior, followed bv Lechta nski in seco nd overa ll a nd first in th e sOcc Senior class. The duo quickly ,,--parated ' tht.1T\Selves from the other rid ers an d had a good ra ce going until Lechta nski lost control of his Hond a .fter the short tab letop. Lechtanski was sidelined by a possible ankl e injury, which gave him a DNF and allowed Valutis to lake th e ru nner· u p spo t to Co n klin and fir st in the 80cc Senior class. Earlier in the d ay, Rod Nesius pu ll ~ d the holeshot aboard his KTM 380 in the Heavyw eigh t C ChiS . Clint ller a nd Stosh K1evickas followed in second an d third . Nesius h~ld the I ~a d for a lap before Klevickas made a move in the b.,ck section lhat took him and his Hond a from third to first in one pa s!'. Klevickas immedia tely pu lled a lead over Ncs ius that would hold to the finish. Nesius , meanwhile, had to hold off the "'p"ated cha rges ' of lIer' s Suzu ki and Kent Bucher' s Kawasa ki to claim second . Bucher passed lIer at the halfwa y point. only to go wide on the down hill freew ay and allow lIer the Insid e line, which he used to retake third and hold it to the finish . In the seco nd moto, Nesi us again pulled the holes hot and held the lead un til the fourt h lap, when first ller and then Klevickas passed him, relegating Nesius to third · a position he wou ld h ol d to the finish . Torres tough at Honda Hills Motocross By Mark Bliss UNN\lLLE,OH,OCT. li Bryant Torres had quite a nigh t at Hond a Hills MX, win ning the 250cc B class and finishing in the ru nner-up position in the 16-24 class. In 250cc B action, Torres and his KX250 look the holesh ot in both motes and held the point position to the finish. However, he had company in both mu tus in the form of a YZ250 and its pilot, Tommy Layman, wh o hounded Torres in both motes, with the two ride-rsnever more than a couple of bike lengths awa y from one another. H owe ver, althou gh Layma n was shadowing To rres' every move., he could no t find a way around, a nd Torres too k top honors in the class. • In the 16-24 class, Torr es had his han ds full wit h the likes of Laym a n and Suzuki-moun ted Brand on Shu ll. In the first moto, Shu ll put his RM out front a nd fended off the attacks of Torres, thu s taking the mo to win, with Tor res in tow . In th e second mo to, Lay m a n go t a much be tte r sta rt a nd was m ixin g it up w ith Torres a n d Sh ull th ro u ghout th e m oto . Lay ma n grabbe d top hon ors in mot o two, wit h Shu ll coming in sec ond, followed by Torres in third . Sh u ll, th erefo re, took th e ove ra ll w ith his 2·1 mo to finish es. Torres took second overa ll, followed by Layman in third . There was a virtual wa r raging in the Mini Sen ior class be tween the YZ80s of Ross Adams and Matt Pritchard. In the first moto, Pritchard gr ab bed th e holeshot and hoped to put some di st an ce be tw een hi mself an d th e res t o f th e pack. Ada ms had d ifferent plan s, how ever. The YZ rider sta lked Prit char d for the first half of the moto befo re ma kin g his move for the lead position. Once out fron t, Ad ams found some breathing roo m and held on for the win. The seco nd moto bega n in the sa me way as the first: with Pri tch a rd in t he lead, d irectl y ah ead of Adams. The ova were never more tha n a bike len gth a pa rt . with Pritcha rd always in control of the lead , Unlike the first moto, how ever, Pri tchard was able to ma tch Adams' every move, taking the moto victory just ahead of his YZ -mo u nted fo e .
