Yamaha 's Mark Mat heis and C RSOO ri der Ji m Wi llia mson gave chase but could n' t quite keep up the pace set by Robinson. Ma theis was a b le to d o mu c h th e same in th e Ov er 40 class, taking the hole shot in bot h motos and roosting a w ay to victory, wi th Williamson and KX250 rid er Terry Shee ts in tow. Ho nd a pilot Brian Beckhcld won the largest class of th e evenin g, the 125cc C class, by vi rtue uf hi s 2-1 m ota fi ni s hes. In the fi rs t mo to , Su z uki rid er Bra d Wa rd led Beck ho ld to the finish lin e. In the second mo ta, Beckhold wa.s first across the s line, fo llo wed by Jason j am e a nd Wa rd. Ward na iled d o wn se co nd overall wit h h is 1-3 finishes while James fin ished third. In 250cc C action, Suzuki-m ounted Ben Boice secured th e overall by winning both mot os. CARl.5IlAD, CA OCT. 17 , The 80cc classes at Ca rlsbad Raceway were up for grabs as a large amount of riders did battle. At the end of the day, however, Clinton Pierce could clai m to be the fas tes t min i rid er of th e day, as he topped the 80cc Intermediate class. In the Novice class, David Meyers wo n the secon d mot a and the overall. Shae Smi th, mean w hile, carne o ut on top in the 80cc Beginne r class. Th e first mot o started off with a bang wh en Za c Wray got the hol eshot and left the second turn by him seJf.. Pierce and 80cc Exper t rider Micke y Gri ffin tangled in the second comer, with both going down hard. Wray pulled a huge lead over Griffin and Pierce, w ho w ere still shaking off the crash. Wray bega n to lose so me s team, however, an d Griffin started to close on him in a hurry. As the w hite flag ca me out, Griffin was dogging yYray to the limits. Griffm swung wide in a co m er and almost high -sided - a lthough the race wasn't for position, nobody had told these two, and they ca rne overDcvil's Drop with Wray a wh eel length ahead to take the firs t-mote win . In the second mota, Pierce wasn' t abo ut to g ive his co mpetitors another l ~second advantage. He g ra bbed th e holes hot and took off with the lea d . Wray and Gri ffin started w here they had left off, b u t this time Griffin was able to make the pass in the horseshoe on the third lap. Pierce, however, had left the pack behi nd, and it wo uld take a disaster to preve nt him from tak in g the moto win and the overall. Griffin managed to win the Expert class but, aft er s ufferin g through tw o bad starts, he was unable to beat th e Intermediates. When the ga te dropped fo r the combined 80cc Beginner and Novice classes, Meyers g ra b be d the holes hot awa y fro m Brandon Gui neen and Ju stin Herrma nn. Meyers led the pack into Ratt lesnake Gulch, bu t when the pac k rea ppeared, he was runnin g fourth an d Cuineen was the leader . C ui necn bega n to pull o ut the lead wh ile Herrmann and Tyler Roberts battled ove r S<.'COnd . Roberts fell, and tha t allowed Meyers to move ba ck into third - a move tha t would p rove to be essentia l in terms of the overall. G u ine en won the mo ta and p roved to be the man to bea t. The firs t Beginner around wa s Shane McCassel: he was followed by Neal Degarmo and Shea Sm ith. Smith rode to the first -mota win in the Beginner class. The ga te fe ll for th e second 80cc Begin ne r /Novice class and Herrmann grabbed the ho les ho t; he was fo llowed by M ~y ers and Bobby Romero . OCT. 17 A ve ry cballenging and w ell-prepared track and th e su n ny, SO-degree wea ther all mad e fo r a reall y great day of ra cing at Carlsbad for 22 m embers of the Riv ers id e Old · Timers M X, where Mark Brooks "maste red " th e M a s te r class. The first mota got under way with the ru nni ng o f th e Master division - both A a nd B classes . Ma rk Brooks was the o nlv Mas ter A.-clas s rid er ou t there, an d he took th e ho lcs ho t a nd h1't the to p position all th e way for the w in . Master B-class rider Dennis Mid dl et on s ta lled his Yamaha 400 at the first tum. Jack Roten , rid ing close behind Middleton, ha d the sa me p ro blem with his Yama ha 400. Af ter many a ttempts to resta rt, Rot en ma naged to get go ing befo re Mid d leton did, a nd he went on to pass Malcolm McCassey for seco nd. The second moto saw Brooks taking th~ lead right at the start and slaying with it all the way to the checke red flag. Dave Jaco b us was th e fas test in Ma st er B class, a nd Rot en followed him in at the finish. Moto one of the Ex~rt class started with Jim McConnell, ri ding a KX 250, tak in g th e ho leshot and ho lding it for five laps for the big wi n. George Spearing ca me in with a dose second. Th e second moto began with Spea ri n g quickly getting the lead, but McCoonell was rig ht there on his rear fender. McConnell then went down o n lap thr ee and Spearing took the mota win. McConnell wasn't down fo r lo ng, however, and he ca me in with a second-place finish. Amateur Mike Brooks charged his Honda into the lead and held on for three laps; then Dennis Rosenberg. on his VZ400 , moved up to take the lead an d then the mo to. John Clemens too k seco nd an d Berry Hale was there for third place. Th e second mot o sta rted. w ith Broo ks in the lead a nd ho ldi ng on for fou r la ps. Rosenberg. who sta rted in next-to-last place , worked his w ay up and took over the lead and won the moto. Brooks was there for seco nd and Clemens took thi rd pl ace. In Novice action, John Frid lund turned the power up and led thing s until Phil Blackburn took over on la p two. Ph il ke p t his lead a nd w rapped u p the wi n. Frid lu nd came in second. MI OCT. 11 , James Taylor took his Yamaha YZ to the "in in th e 12-IS Youth 125ee division at the fina l racing event of 1998 at Dutch Sport Park. Taylor bested the competition with both s peed and consistency. It was the last ru nning of the "Mus kra t Run" at Dutch Sport Park. The track wa s run in the back woods section of the old track, and it featu red long, fast straightaways with na tural d ro p -a way ju m ps , off-camber co rne rs , a nd a spin off from the 70s w ith a natural -terrain tayou t -The Mu.. ..krat Run also ,sign ifies the com ptetio n of the racing season at Dutch. In th e opening mot o of the 125ee 12-15 d ivision, th e holes hot w ent to S uz u ki- mo u n te d Da n ny Beckett. Tay lor w as sec ond, wi th Judd Bagladi third, Anthony Milks fo urth a nd Adam Sherwood fifth . Becke tt ca me back in to view whh a bigger lead over Ta y lor a nd the pack - a le a d th a t w ould grow to some five seco nds o n the seco nd lap. Taylo r a lmost th rew hi s YZ away in the sa nd-roc ke r sec tio n, bu t he ma naged to so me · how keep it o n tw o w hee ls. Th e ba ttle for third heated up as th e d uo of Bagladi a nd Milks d id battle. The tw o cn ten...'d into th e new Pro Actio n tabletop jump side by s id e, wi th both riders collid ing in th e next co m er. Bagladi, tho ugh, was a ble to hold o n to third d < ite th e pressure. 'Sp Meanwhile, it wa s an Beckett up front, and he took the checkered flag with a co m forta ble margin o ver Ta ylor . Taylor had a l G-second advantage over the battle for th e th ird spot, which Bagladi won over Milks . FIfth went to Kasey Turley. Betwt.'e1\ matos, it wa s apparent that the end o f the season w a s approa ching , as Beckett, Bagladi and Milks aU suffered mechanical gremlins in their o ther classes and were unable to contest for the final 12-15 moto. This made for easy pickings for Yamaha-mounted Tayl or, who romped h is way into the winner's circle. Ta ylor ripped th e ho les hot in th e th innedo u t fie ld over Turley, Adam Burke a nd Andy Sherwood. He then ch ecked ou t, taking an casv win over Turley. lbird pla ce went to Bur ke. .
