Johnson wins Vegas Vintage DT By Mike Zbrozek Photo by Dennis Suter LAS VEGAS, NY,ocr.4 California n Jeff Johnson fou nd the slip-a nd-slide surface of the Las Vegas Motor Speed way an ideal match for his stock-framed 650cc Trium ph twin as he. ove rcame the first-lap lead of speedy Iowan Ricky Fiscel to win the Pro-twin main event. John son , one of 22 Pro-Twin challeng ers at the final round of the VDTRA Pro-Am Na tional Dir t Track Racing Series who worked thr ough four heats and two semis to set the stage for the 16-rider field, gaine d a front -row start wit h his heat-race win. At the start of the main , though , it was Fiscel who launched his Trium ph twin in to the lead , with Johns on, Bill Sny der, 1997-98 ProTwi n champ Mark Gibso n, vetera n Edd ie Mu ld er a nd Ar t Fred enbu rah left to d ice thr ou gh traffic to get into Fisce!'s wa ke. By lap tw o, Johnso n had cau ght Fiscel 'an d pa ssed the form er Pro-Twin cha mpion for the lead , while Gibso n go t pa st Snyd er an d into th ird , taking Mu ld er a n d Fred e nb u rah pas t Sn yd er as well , in to fourth and fifth, respectively. Back up fron t, John son con tinued to hold the lea d , bu t by mid race t he d e te rmi ned Fis ceI appea red to have him well in range. As the la ps wo und d own, however, Johns on picked up the pace on the treacherou s su rface, and in last-lap traffic he pu t the contes t out of reach. Neither Gibson, Mu lder no r Fred enb u rah were able to ad va nce their position s, alt houg h Snyd er was passed on the white-flag lap by the charging XR Ha rley of Mike Pa tte rson. With a grea t effort, Snyd er mana ged a last-lap re pass of Pa tterson to take sixth at the flag. The Pr o-Mas ter s main p ro mised to be an exciting event, as Johnny Isaacs and cu rre nt ProMasters cha m p Joh n Pike had co me into th e even t with only two points separating them in the title chase . As it turned out, how ever, Fike was unable to make a race of it on the uncertain su rface, and he set tled for seventh - far short of the po in ts nee ded to re tain his ti tle. Ve tera n Mulder showed the VDTRA regu lars he had n't lost his touch since his old Ascot Park days, as he won the eve nt, lead ing flag to flag. Behind M u lde r ca me t h e BSA th ump er of VDT RA founder jo hnny Isaacs, his ru nner- up effort sealing the championship for 1998. Finishing close to Isaacs in third was Co lo rado vetera n racer Bob Conway . In the hotlv con tested Pro 600cc class, TPRspo nsored .ste~e Nicho ls was the manto beat as he pu t his Yama ha 500 into the lead, ahead of curre nt Pro 600cc cha mp Rick Fiscel. Fiscel had other plans for N ichols, ho wever, as he sized up his line for nine laps, finally motorin g his Yamaha by on the last circui t to steal the win. Con way agai n p u t in an im pressive effort to take third, wi th challengers John Jeffries and Bill Snyde r in close con tention at the finish.
