The 80cc classes at Ca rlsbad Raceway were up
for grabs as a large amount of riders did battle.
At the end of the day, however, Clinton Pierce
could clai m to be the fas tes t min i rid er of th e
day, as he topped the 80cc Intermediate class.
In the Novice class, David Meyers wo n the
secon d mot a and the overall. Shae Smi th, mean w hile, carne o ut on top in the 80cc Beginne r class.
Th e first mot o started off with a bang wh en
Za c Wray got the hol eshot and left the second
turn by him seJf.. Pierce and 80cc Exper t rider
Micke y Gri ffin tangled in the second comer, with
both going down hard. Wray pulled a huge lead
over Griffin and Pierce, w ho w ere still shaking
off the crash. Wray bega n to lose so me s team,
however, an d Griffin started to close on him in a
hurry. As the w hite flag ca me out, Griffin was
dogging yYray to the limits. Griffm swung wide
in a co m er and almost high -sided - a lthough the
race wasn't for position, nobody had told these
two, and they ca rne overDcvil's Drop with Wray
a wh eel length ahead to take the firs t-mote win .
In the second mota, Pierce wasn' t abo ut to
g ive his co mpetitors another l ~second advantage. He g ra bbed th e holes hot and took off with
the lea d . Wray and Gri ffin started w here they
had left off, b u t this time Griffin was able to
make the pass in the horseshoe on the third lap.
Pierce, however, had left the pack behi nd,
and it wo uld take a disaster to preve nt him from
tak in g the moto win and the overall. Griffin
managed to win the Expert class but, aft er s ufferin g through tw o bad starts, he was unable to
beat th e Intermediates.
When the ga te dropped fo r the combined
80cc Beginner and Novice classes, Meyers
g ra b be d the holes hot awa y fro m Brandon
Gui neen and Ju stin Herrma nn. Meyers led the
pack into Ratt lesnake Gulch, bu t when the pac k
rea ppeared, he was runnin g fourth an d Cuineen
was the leader . C ui necn bega n to pull o ut the
lead wh ile Herrmann and Tyler Roberts battled
ove r S<.'COnd . Roberts fell, and tha t allowed Meyers to move ba ck into third - a move tha t would
p rove to be essentia l in terms of the overall.
G u ine en won the mo ta and p roved to be the
man to bea t.
The firs t Beginner around wa s Shane McCassel: he was followed by Neal Degarmo and Shea
Sm ith. Smith ma de h is move an d passed Dega rmo in o ne la p a nd .the n s ta rted cha si ng do w n
McCa ssel , ma kin g tha t pass bef o re the w hi te
flag ca me o ut. Smith rode to the first -mota win
in the Beginner class.
The ga te fe ll for th e second 80cc
Begin ne r /Novice class and Herrmann grabbed
the ho les ho t; he was fo llowed by M ~y ers and
Bobby Romero . Meyers m ad e s h o r t work of
Herrmann and took advantage of the open track
in front of him . Guinct.~ was s tuck. back. in traf·
fic and he knew he had to finish second to win
the overall. He gave it his bes t and managed a
third, givi n g th e overa ll to th e higher finisher of
the seco nd mota · Meyers.
Once aga in, the Beginner class was jumbled

James Taylor took his Yamaha YZ to the "in in
th e 12-IS Youth 125ee division at the fina l racing event of 1998 at Dutch Sport Park. Taylor
bested the competition with both s peed and
consistency.
It was the last ru nning of the "Mus kra t Run"
at Dutch Sport Park. The track wa s run in the
back woods section of the old track, and it featu red long, fast straightaways with na tural

Taylor had a l G-second advantage over the

Milks . FIfth went to Kasey Turley.
Betwt.'e1\ matos, it wa s apparent that the end

Bagladi and Milks aU suffered mechanical gremlins in their o ther classes and were unable to
contest for the final 12-15 moto. This made for
easy pickings for Yamaha-mounted Tayl or, who
romped h is way into the winner's circle.
Ta ylor ripped th e ho les hot in th e th innedo u t fie ld over Turley, Adam Burke a nd Andy
