IL, SEPT. 26 ro m the first turn of the ve ry first la p o f practice, it was o bvio us that John Plumb was goi ng to be th e ma n to b ea t a t . round 16 of the American Hi storic Racin g Motorcycle Associatio n 's C la ss ic Bike Maga zine Vintage Di rt Track Series, held at the leg en d ary P eoria Motorcycle C lu b grounds . And P lumb didn 't disappoint, dominating the Sportsman 250 an d 750cc classes. Midweek rainstorms and subsequent . high humidity left the race track s till very w et on Saturday, but by midmorning Su nd ay , it w as finally dry eno ugh for the PMC to work it in to, a ve ry good racin g su rface. Sport sman 250cc action saw Plumb slid e his orange Yamaha to th e front of th e fie ld and never look back. Behind him, Dav e Wills, riding a tw o-st rok e Harley-Dav id son, rode to a fine second -place fini sh , 'despite fightin g mi ssed shifts th rou g hout th e d ay . Bulta co-m ount ed J err y H olm a n d 'Yama ha rider Rick St iefel wou n d up third a nd fourth, w it h trials ace Cu rt Co rner corning in fifth aboard an Ossa DMR. Plumb came fro m a th ird -place start to wi n his heat race, then wo n again in th e m a in eve nt, lea ding a Triumph sweep of the top th ree; Dennis Williams and John Skinner we re in the place and show spots . Williams also compe ted in thr ee classes, top ping the Bomber division. Hamilton's only defeat carne at the hands of Tri umph rid er Charlie Sou thga te in the 14-r id er Se nior d ivis ion .
