Mullen's the man at Trail-Way ST By Len Breech eral Ne w Jerse y-based rid ers wer e at a pair of mon ey races in New Yor k thi s weekend, thus givi ng Mullen free rein. In the 250cc A final, Mullen ju m pe d in front of Jim Haas, Nathan Davis, Raun Wood and Co rey Harm es. The race wa s re d -F gged o n th e third lap w he n H aas la high -sid ed hard in the second turn a nd so rnehow was missed by the rest of the field . On the restart, it was Mullen agai n in front, this time wit h He rm es, Dave Smith, Wood and Haas followin g. Tha t ord er stay ed the same to . the end , with Mull en winning by a straight. The tlOOcc A cont est was simi lar to th e 25O s, with Mullen quickly in front of Will Russell Ed Hyd e and a than Davi s, who moved into third off the second turn on lap two . The real competition came in the Sportsman final, which offers a wa y for the Pros to race for more mon ey, but is open to anyone who wants to try his or her skill aga inst the best in the area . After falling w hile lead ing the 600cc Pro main, Rick Winsett sto rmed back to cla im th e lead befor e the com pletion of the first lap and pull e d away to a fairly easy win ove r Phil Libhart a nd Mike McKee. Mull en looked to be o n anot he r ro ll, as he grabbed the lead from McKee, Winsett and Libhart, Bu t Wins ett started his cha rge by ge tting pa st Mckee off the fourt h tu rn on the o pe ning la p a nd pr essu ring Mullen . Winse tt slip ped under Mulle n com ing off the seco nd tum on the third lap , as the front three traveled the track in close formation . The racing got a little too cl ose , a s McKee and Mullen tou ched while coming off the fourth tum on the fifth lap. McKee w ent down a nd was unable to make repairs. CA, SEI'f. 26 Shawn "Mad Dog" McConnell got dialed in for th e 1998 Coo rs Light United States Nat io na l Speedway Championship, and he wen t four for four in the final ni gh t of International Speedwa y's 30th season of racin g a t the Oran ge County Fairgro und s. The nignt featured an all-Scra tch program as a wannup for the Ll.S. Na tiona l Championship. McConnell wen t und efeated thr ough all of his preliminary rides to take his pla ce in the Scratch . mai n a lo ngsi d e th e other qua lifiers: Bobby Schwartz , Brad Ox ley, An dy Nort h ru p a nd Dukie Ennolenko . Everything was going McCon nell 's way , as he drew the pole for the mai n. Schwa rtz was in tw o , a n d Ox ley had dra wn th e t h ree sp ot. No rthru p and Ermolenko were on the outside in fou r an d five . Th e guys who liked the insi de we re o n the insi de and the boys w ho liked to pl ay g u t in the dir t we re on th e o u ts id e. The question was, Which line woul d work the best? The an swer was quick in coming: McConnell cut a gre at ga te and wo n the race to the first corner. He wa s d own on the low line, and O xley was right with him, tryin g to get a wheel underneath so tha t he cou ld move McConndl off the gr oove. It didn' t work, and the four laps went by very qu ickly. Schwa rtz picked up third , with Northrup fourth and Ermolenko fifth. Three teams mad e the ca ll for the Sidecar mai n, and it was su re a good thing tha t they're friends off the track, becau se th ey sure l ik~ to rub on one ano ther on the track. Off the line, it was th e tea m of Duane CarmOIlt a nd Rich ard Tailin g tha t got the call and took their stro ngru nning Ho nda to the fro nt. The team of Steve Morrow and Mik e McDon nell ca me righ t back o~ the ir Suz uki and got the dri ve out of four to take the lead o n the seco nd la p .
