Honda-mou nted Jacobu s beat the rest of the field to the first tu m to grab the holeshot. Norm Ga ige r followed in s~an d , Mth Ste ve Bussel, Gary Cogd ill and Dennis Patterson round ing ou t the top five. Coming down Apima l Leap, Jacobu s held th e lead , follow ed by Kawasaki-mou nted Larry Owe ns, who was able to pick up four posi~ tions after a sixth-place star t. BusseI d ropped to third, with Cod gill following closely in fourth. Co ming off the vintage tra ck, Jacob us was still in control, followed by' a charging Busse!. who w as able to move back into second in the canyon. Earl Shu ler followed in a d istan t third and Gaiger was fourth, with Owens dropping to fifth. Jacobu s held the top spot comin g over Sky Jump, with Busse l clo sing to within five bi ke len gth s . The top two positions rema ined the same as the ride rs .rea ppea red on th e mot ocro ss track. Jacobus was in con trol, wit h Hond a-mounted Bussel d osing back up to within two St. 'Conds . Jacobus maintain ed his two-second margin ove r Bussel 3:,-they ca m e to the e n trance of Bud' s Creek. Bussel would stru ggle in the same com er, a llowing Jacobu s to stre tch his lead to five se co nds . Owens was ab le to pa ss b ot h Shuler and Gaiger on the vin tage track to move into third . Gaiger passed Shuler for fou rth on th e stra ightaway heading toward the tower. Jacobus was able to maintain his five-second lea d ove r Buss el as th e duo cam e ou t o f th e canyon . For all intents and purposes, the race for the top spo t was ove r, as Jacobus con tinued to stre tch his lead. Owens followed a distant third, with Gaig er and Shul er rounding ou t the top fiv e. W it h th e top tw o po sitio ns settled a nd Owens comfortably in third , th e batt le continued for fou rth and fifth. Gaiger d ropped out of con tention with a flat rear tire. Shu ler mov ed int o four th, with Pa tterson a close fifth. Jacobus cru ised to victo ry wit h a 4O~seco n d cushion, followed by Bussel in second and Ow ens in third .
