BUCHANAN, MI, SErf. 13
Kevin La m pe took h is Thompson's Mo tor
Spo rts /Stoughton 's Cycle /Steve Kopetski-supported Honda to wins in' bo th the 125cc a nd
250cc Expe r t d iv is io n s. Lampe di d i t w ith
holesh ots in all fou r motes, fendi ng off a talent ed field of riders in both d ivisions.
Th e In d ia n a St a te Mo to cr o ss ev e nt was
atten ded by more tha n 700 rid er s, with quali fiers in the ~25cc B a nd C di visions along wi th
the 250cc C di vision . There we re ride rs from all
over the Mid west, makin g the competition and
the racing very close du e to the depth of talent
in all the classes. Again, Red Bud had the track
in excellent racin g shape. This kept Tim Ritchie
and his crew bu sy all day long.
Lam pe ripped the op enin g holes hot in the
250cc Expert di vision , with Da vid Gay lord on
his M,'ple City Cycle in second and Barry Anglemyer thi rd , w h ile Juhn Sier and Ja y Wagn er
made the right-hand corner in fourth a nd fifth.
Wag ner was on the m ove on the ope ning lap ,
cha lle ng ing Ga y lord for secon d , but Wagn er
went down in the sa nd swi tchbac ks, remounting
in seve nth. Gaylord was giving Lampe a run for
it d uring the secon d lap , taking ove r the lead in
th e Va lley Tr ip les. Wagner had mo ved back
through the pack to take over the third spot by
the completion of the third lap ,
Joh n Baker made a top-five showing afte r a
terribl e start. Baker ended up sixth by the moto's
end . Gay lord took the checkers for the first -moto
win, wit h Lam pe ho t on the Kawasa ki's rear
fender. Wagner brought it home for third , with
Rod Marshall in fou rth, experiencing some reed valve pro blem s.
The second mot o aga in saw Lam pe rip the
holesh ot, with Gay lord second , Mar shall th ird
and Sier fourth. Gaylord cha llenged Lampe for
the lead on the opening lap with an inside line
ove r the famous Double Doubl e Pipe Jump, but
the front end of Gay lord's KX wa she d out just
after tou ching down . It was a violent crash, and
Gay lord was shaken. This ga ve Lampe a cus h- •
ion, beca use the pack had to 'Scra mble to avo id
the downed Gaylord.
At the end of the first lap, the running orde r
was Lampe in first with a five-second lead over
Ma rshall in second , foll ow ed by Sier in third,
Baker in fourth and Wagner in fifth.
Wagner stu ffed Baker for fourt h on the second lap in a tight corn er. John Sier wa s ch allenging Ma rsha ll for second on the th ird lap ; then
th e Si er' s Kawa saki was se en ca rtw hce li ng
down the Monza wa ll downhill. Sier remounted
on hi s Fa ctor y Co n nec tio n / O ' Neall FMF I
Thomas Kawasaki, but he wa s off the pace and
tallied fifth.
.
Up front , Lampe cru ised in for the win and
the overall for the da y.
