Achey aces Aztec Motocross mini action By Stacy Jensen COLORADO SPRINGS,CO, SEPT. 13 The q uiet stillness of the Co lorado pl ai ns wa s bro ken by the roar from the Aztec Famil y Raceway, which wa s holdi ng an even t sanctioned by th e Spo r ts Rid er Association of Colo rad o and hosted by M&M Connectio ns . The d ay was hot in more wa ys than one. As racers in the Mi~i (SOc N ovice class sat c) th e lin e, bodies a nd minds we re ten se. ic Ache y ca me to ra ce for th at all-important la st mark in th e Novice class, as d id Rick Sticher. There wo uld be thr ee marks awarded a t the end of the race, and both of these yo ung men wanted to fini sh ou t th eir N ov ice ca reer wit h a fir st place trophy for the mant el. As the gate dropped on the firs: moto, t-t-year-old Honda rider Ashley Boham looked like a red streak as she too k on total control going down the start hill and in to the first tum. How ever, she lost traction and slid ou t in a le ft-hand tum o n the so ut h end of the track, letting Achey, Stitcher, Joel Ca rbaugh and Bry a n Weigel ge t by her. Achey re ma ined in control of th e mot a from th a t po in t on, neve r giving any g round to Stieber, who would stay in secon d, while Weigel had third, fourth went to Justin Job (w ho had co me up from seventh), and fifth would belon g to Ca rbaug h. Boham wo u ld finish sixth. The second mo ta began in mu ch the sa me man ner , as Ms. Boham showed the boy s how it' s done - takin g th e ho les ho t again ! A ro und a right -ha nd turn and ov er a small tab le, she lost her adva n ta ge a s Stie ber and Ac h ey , in th at order , passed he r by, Boham wo uld re main a solid th ird a t the end of the race, with Weigel fourth and Ca rbaugh main taining fifth; bu t th e real acti on o f th e d ay w as o u t fro n t wi th, the lea d er s, who w ere sid e by sid e a nd w heel to w heel over most of the cou rse. Stieber had the lead for the first lap . Halfway th rough the St.'Ca nd lap, on the ea st side (acro ss from the spec tators), Aehey made his move with an ope n thr ot tie · up, ov er a nd d own in to a portion of th e track that was out of sight. As th ey em er ged, Ach ev was in the lead. Sticher would pressure Achey for the remainder of the race, and at times these two riders loo ked like they w ere ex tensions of o ne a no ther. Ach ey remained cool despite the press ure he was feeling andcame awa y with first overall; ,Sticher was second . Weigel thi rd , Boham fourth an d Carba ugh maintained fifth. Achey and Sticher were ad vanced to Amateur status, which allowed them to race in the Mini Amateur dh.;sio~ the afternoon. AVIS 'fIX X-H'/ ft';!:.
