Lampe di d i t w ith holesh ots in all fou r motes, fendi ng off a talent ed field of riders in both d ivisions. Th e In d ia n a St a te Mo to cr o ss ev e nt was atten ded by more tha n 700 rid er s, with quali fiers in the ~25cc B a nd C di visions along wi th the 250cc C di vision . There we re ride rs from all over the Mid west, makin g the competition and the racing very close du e to the depth of talent in all the classes. Again, Red Bud had the track in excellent racin g shape. This kept Tim Ritchie and his crew bu sy all day long. Lam pe ripped the op enin g holes hot in the 250cc Expert di vision , with Da vid Gay lord on his M,'ple City Cycle in second and Barry Anglemyer thi rd , w h ile Juhn Sier and Ja y Wagn er made the right-hand corner in fourth a nd fifth. Wag ner was on the m ove on the ope ning lap , cha lle ng ing Ga y lord for secon d , but Wagn er went down in the sa nd swi tchbac ks, remounting in seve nth. Gaylord was giving Lampe a run for it d uring the secon d lap , taking ove r the lead in th e Va lley Tr ip les. Wagner had mo ved back through the pack to take over the third spot by the completion of the third lap , Joh n Baker made a top-five showing afte r a terribl e start. Baker ended up sixth by the moto's end . Gay lord took the checkers for the first -moto win, wit h Lam pe ho t on the Kawasa ki's rear fender. Wagner brought it home for third , with Rod Marshall in fou rth, experiencing some reed valve pro blem s. The second mot o aga in saw Lam pe rip the holesh ot, with Gay lord second , Mar shall th ird and Sier fourth. Gaylord cha llenged Lampe for the lead on the opening lap with an inside line ove r the famous Double Doubl e Pipe Jump, but the front end of Gay lord's KX wa she d out just after tou ching down . It was a violent crash, and Gay lord was shaken. This ga ve Lampe a cus h- • ion, beca use the pack had to 'Scra mble to avo id the downed Gaylord. At the end of the first lap, the running orde r was Lampe in first with a five-second lead over Ma rshall in second , foll ow ed by Sier in third, Baker in fourth and Wagner in fifth. Wagner stu ffed Baker for fourt h on the second lap in a tight corn er. John Sier wa s ch allenging Ma rsha ll for second on the th ird lap ; then th e Si er' s Kawa saki was se en ca rtw hce li ng down the Monza wa ll downhill. Sier remounted on hi s Fa ctor y Co n nec tio n / O ' Neall FMF I Thomas Kawasaki, but he wa s off the pace and tallied fifth. . Up front , Lampe cru ised in for the win and the overall for the da y. In the first round of the 250cc A action, Gibson was the d om inant for ce, as he had a hu ge first·place lead ove r Ches ter, who finished second . Boruff attemp ted to get by Chester but was u nsu ccessful, and he dropped to fifth at the finish line. Gibson took cha rge of the second moto and didn't look back. Ren ner rode in seco nd un til the midpoint, when Boruff and Ches ter moved by as Renn er d ropped to fifth. Boruff turn ed the tabl es on Ches ter for the moto, ou tperform ing Ches ter to take seco nd, with Ches ter third. TI,e Casey Cycle City-spo nso red Kawasa ki of Jason Bailey carved thro ug h the field to move from a sixthplace start to a first-pl ace win. Hu ffman held on to second p lac e, while Bryan Happle put hi s Yam ah a in third spot. . The Women's start was the sa me type as the Mini's.
