CMC frans-Cal Series South, Round 1 .. . ~ ' ~ ~ o SAN BERNARDINO, CA,SEPT. 13 fter nearly a six-mon th lay-off du e to a broken le g , Team Kawasaki's Damon Huffman returned to actio n at the opening round of the CMC SunStar Sprocket Trans-Ca l Ser ies a t Gle n Helen Racewa y Par k . Hu ffman looked liked his old , hea lthy self as he ro de to a ca u tio us secondplace finish in the first moto, and then returned to win the secon d moto for the overall win . "You have to remem ber where you h a v e been be fore you kn ow w he re you ' re going," sai d Huffman , who wo n ma ny Tra ns-Cal races d uri ng his amateur racing d ays. Hu ffma n joined more than 500 other ra cers fo r t h e ser ie s opene r, which attracted riders from as fa r away as Utah , ew Mexico, Arizo na, Texas an d evada. All eyes we re focused on the 250cc Pro-class race - Huffma n's first ra ce since his injury. When the ga te dropped for the firs t mot o, Billy Payne nabbed the ho lesho t and led until hitting a kicker that sen t him through a berm, w hich resu lted in a cras h. Huffman sud denly fou nd himself in the lead, but Yamaha rider Spud Walters wa s right behi nd the Ka w a s a k i ri d er and was re ad y to pounce. Wa lters quickly put the move on the Kawasaki s ta r an d rode o ff with th e first-mote win . "At firs t I thou gh t Pa yn e was just goi ng to take off," Walt ers sa id. "Tha t kid is su pe rfas t, ha s grea t sty le and is sm oo th. But after he fell, I caug h t Huffman and I knew I was just going faster, so I made the pass." Huffman, mean wh ile, played it safe and settled into second place , w here he would stay to the finis h. "I h ad g oo d li nes, but I s ta r ted pu mping up and just couldn't carry any speed in those good lines," Hu ffm an expl ai ned . Third in the m o to went to T REbacked Sco tt Myers, followed by Tim Sharp and John Sereika . A more rela xed Hu ffman showed up for the second moto. Even thoug h firstmot o winner Walt ers jumped out to the early lead , Huffman mat ched his pace for the first half of the mo to before passing him and pulling away for the w in and the overall trophy . Walters e nded up havi ng to work hard to keep second , as Pay ne gat hered momentum late in the race to cha llenge the Yama ha rid er . Payn e's charge, however, came a lit tle too la te, as Walters held on for second p lace. Thi rd pl ace this time wen t to Danny Ca rlson, followed by Myer s and Sharp . Payn e was no t to be outdone in the 125cc Pro class , however. After cras hing out of the 250cc Pro overall stand ings, Payn e came back to win both 125cc Pro mo tos . His closest competitor in the (Left) Kawasaki's Damon Huffman returned to racing following his recuperation from a leg injury. He went 2-1 10 win the 250cc Pro class at the CMC Trans-Ca l Series at Glen Helen Raceway Park. (Above) Up-and-comer Billy Payne topped both 125cc Pro motos . 125cc class was Chris Gosselaar, but crashes wo uld eventually cost Gosselaar dearlv and , as a resu lt, he would hav e to settle' for fourth on the da y. Second place ended up going to Greg Schnell , followed by Carlson . Fourteen -year-old Bobby Bonds took con tro l of the 125cc Intermed ia te d ivisio n . In the first m ot o , Bond s ca me b a ck fr om a 12th-pl a ce s ta rt in th e fir st mot o to fin is h seco n d behind Jo n a th a n Shimp, bu t, in th e seco n d rno to, Bonds had things much easie r, as he slid past R.] . Thompson to take th e le a d a nd th e moto w in . Shi mp ended up second overa ll, followed by Thompson, Mik e Sleeter an d Christopher Neitze l. A flat tir e e nded any hop e Sean Hamblin had of doi ng well in the 125cc Intermed iate class , but an overall victory in the Schoo lboy clas s made tha t di sa p po in tm e n t t h a t much e a sier to l '~ accept.
