At the 13th annual CMMC /KTM /SMP Mini ati onal, held at Barona Oaks Raceway, sheer determination was needed by all 331 contestants. With humidity unusually h igh for Sout hern Ca lifo rnia and tempera tures reported to be 108 d egrees, every rider challenging the grueling Baro na Oaks motocross trac k had to muster up their sha re of determination just to come onto the cou rse . The rid ers were, however, ent iced to race the an nual giveaway by the Californ ia Mini Motorcycle Club. The Mini National is an ann ua l eve nt w hich the CMMC, as a no np rofit organi zation, util iz es to d isp e rse mon ey ea rned throu gh ou t th e year. A t th is year's eve nt, more than $25,000 in pri zes were awarded . Each of those wh o competed in th e 39 d ifferent even ts were give n prizes . Of course, the gra nd pnzes we nt to the Stock overall winners. These riders were granted the opportu nity to p ick firs t fro m the huge assortment of prizes. A variety of prizes were given away, bu t the huge 32-inch televisions caught the eyes of many young competitors. Dustin Nelson was worried about the prizes; as an Expert, he said, "Show me the mo ney!" elso n p roved he was the Ex pe rt to bea t, a n d h e co llected the lion's share of the Expert purse. Nelson brought home cash in both the 12Scc Pro and 250cc Expert com petitions. Nelso n's luck ran s ho rt in th e 12Sec Expert class, and Angelo lngrande al s o go t a cl ear lo ok at so me of th e money. Several riders enjo yed mu ltiple class wins. Sean Hamblin made th e best of the 12Scc actio n by taking the checkered in the 12Sec Intermedia te and 12Scc (12IS) catego ries . Billy Laninovich charged h is w ay th rough th e field of bo th th e Su permi ni a nd 80cc Expert d ivis ion s. Jarred Browne was the top 80cc rid er as he took home th ree trophies. Bro wne wo n the 80cc (7-1 J) Stock and Modi fied titles as well as the Stock Novice title. In the smaller-d isplacement actio n, it was Robert Memoli wh o s tood a bove th e rest. Memoli too k hom e both the 60cc (7I J) Stock and Mod ified trophies. Fas test of th e yo unger 60cc rid er s was Chase Takacs, wit h wins in bo th the 60cc (0-6 ) Stock a nd Modified ca tegories. In the Pee Wee (7-8) division, it wa s Bruce Rutherford taking the Stock a nd Modified ti tles. Nic Paluzzi was also a repeat winner in the Pee Wee (0-6) Stock and Modified motos. The other big prize winners included Bobby Bonds , who rod e to the overall in the 250cc Intermed ia te class. Carl Chase took the 250cc Novice ov erall . Don Conne lly won the Ve t Intermediate titl e. Ken Lurcook w a s ove rall in t he Vet No vice, and Vet Beginner was won by Dean Herrera. Jennifer Nelson was the overall Wo men's class rider, a nd Cale Walla ce won t he 80c c Inte rmedia te Stock-class big pri ze. The firs t 12Scc Pro -class m ot o was the best race of the three- da y weekend . The Alba Action / SMP/ FMF Precisionbacked Angelo Ingrand e stirred th ings u p e a rl y af te r ta k ing the h ol esh o t. Mo towor ld / Pro Circuit /E nzo /ZLT's Du stin Nelson was slow off the line, and Tea m Stiffie's Sha un Perolio grabbed the seco nd sp ot. The action was betw een Perolio and elson, as Ingrande had a three-second lead . On lap th ree , seem- I ing ly from out of nowhere, Perolio '.'utjumped Ing rande at the flagpol e tnple and held the inside line. elson closed in on Ingrande, but Ingrande held off his advances through the whoops and on through the uphill section. It wasn't until the flagpole triple that I elso n was able to steal Ingrand e's position. On the next lap , Nelson pulled up on the leader but dropped hi s Yamaha in a tight, slow-speed corner, a nd Ingra nd e again took second. elson quickly go t control and before the lap wa s ou t he sneaked inside Ingran de on a left-hand er . Nelso n was ab le to mak e u p the fo ur-second lead Perolio had enjoyed and challenged . . . . him for the lead. As the white flag flew in this JO-Iap race, the two we re side by side. Th ey d ro ve down the front st ra ig ht, elbo w ing eac h othe r th rou gh th e firs t right-h and turn . Then, on the next turn, Nelson aga in tried to slip inside, causi ng bo th rid ers to fall. Perolio was on top of Nelson's Yamaha, so he was able to ge t u p first. Ing ra nde pull ed up on th e lead ers but both were able to ge t go ing without losin g a position . Once up , Nelso n agai n began pressuring Per olio all throug h the lap and finally ma de the pass by cutting inside Perolio o n a left-ban der. At the checkers, it was elson by two seco nds over Perolio. In th e second rnoto, Nelson really had his share of tro ubles. Ielson lost his moto r while lea ding th e moto, and Ingrande enjoyed his victory over Perolio . Per olio, however, was able to ta ke hom e the second- place mon ey for his 22 effort .
