sprea d and the racing was close, tight and exciting, w ith no racer clearly domina ting - wi th the
exceptio n of Suz uki rider Nick Metcalf, who won
in both the 12...ticc an d 250cc Amateu r classes .

pas s. As the y separa ted, Fra ncis was able to get
go ing qu icker, a nd the finis h order re ma ined

encounter.

tire. Lacey sh o wed him a w heel. Hansen kept

eventually fini shing fifth . Francis st ayed abo ut
10 length s behind Hansen, unable to close. The
real race was between the F&5 Su zuki of Janssen
and the Nic hols Ho nda of Jon Hedden from Valley Ce nte r, Kan sas.
Janssen go t a late start bu t qu ickly cha rged
to third after Lacey fell. Hedden charged righ t to
Janssen's rear tire, showing him a wheel seve ral
ti mes. Ja nssen never founde red a nd he con trolled his lines, bu t he wa s ne ve r able to pull
back a lead , Hedden followed closely. On the last
lap, Hedden attempted a block in the same corner where Hansen and Francis had tangled on
the 125s. Ja nssen saw it comin g; so d id the crowd
• there wa s loud cheeri ng. Iansse n jumped the
triple. Ho wever, ra ther than railing the berm a nd
leaving himself o pen fo r the block, he braked
agg ressively an d held the inside line, preventing
both a block and an inside-out pass. Jans sen then
tripled int o th e w hoops , pu lling a th ree -bikelen g th le a d wi th th e In cr ea se d m o m en tu m ,
main ta ining a com for table lead to the checkered
flag, The SRO crowd chee red the tigh t action!
