At the 1o-mile mark there wa s a needed rese t. TIle next 13 m iles of trail was a little mor e difficult in places, and it was easy to ge t behind, but road sectio ns through out gave the rid e rs tim e to ca tch ba ck up. Check three, a t 27.20 miles, caught many rid ers off g uard. Brewd er was one of the riders to get bur ne . Eig h t m il es of trail foll owed, 'lea d in g to check four .a few hundred yards befo re the gas stop. It was placed in a corne r and caugh t many riders off gu ard , ma ny b y se ve ra l minutes . Brew er wa s about 30 seco n ds hot a nd did the tria ls thing for abou t 40 feet to bum up the time. "I was a little earl y there, but 1 managed to bu rn up the sec ond s," Brewer sa id. "Cree p ing along in that deep sand is tou gh ." The gas wa s at 43 mi les and was a welcome br ea k for all. The temperatur e was now in th e high 90s, and the tou gh trails we re claim ing victims in the lower classes . After th e ga s, the trail got tigh t and meandered thr ough a clay pit . It containe d the most d iverse terrain of the race. Check five was a t 53 miles, and the 10 miles of trail befo re tha t were open enough for most of the fast guys to maintain their time . The distance from chec k fiv e to check six wa s a bo ut four miles, an d on ce again the clu b p laced' the check a nd nabbed rid er s ea rly. Gravitt go t burned there. Brew er burned the check, too. Grav itt and Brew er posted the fast tim e with a one-point loss. Ram ey had br ake prob lem s an d dr op ped two in the section. Brewer was able to cap italize on Ram ey's trou bles, Th ere was a rese t after, th e n o n to chec k eight a t 68.80 miles. The trail was pr ett y mu ch the same as ea rlie r in the race: tight tra il and jeep roa ds . Checks eight, nine and 10 were all ze ro ed by a lmos t every one~ Chec k 10 ca ug h t some ea rly. Quite a few rid ers tallied more hot po ints tha n la te poi nts at the run's end. "Flyin ' Ryan" Fisher moved h imself int o a very rar e a nd e lite ca teg o ry by virtue of a perfect ma ximum score of 16 points a t the 1998 Juni or Na tional Champions hip, held at the Gold Cou ntry Fairgrounds. • It was Fisher 's third consecutive title - a fea t tha t ha s never been accomplish ed in the Ju nior Speedway ranks. In fac t, no other Jun ior ha s won the tit le mor e than tw ice. Previou sly, Ronn.ie Correy 0 981-82). josh Lasen 0986-87), Brent Werner 0988-89) and Ste phen Dow ning 099394) had wo n two consec ut ive titles, but a ll faile d in th eir thi rd a tte mpt or g rew too old to com. plete the hat trick. Fisher ha s the o ppo rtunity to put the record virtua lly out of reach, as he still has one mo re yea r of Juni or Speedway eligib ility left in 1999. ' Unlike the 500cc Pros that were compe ting in th e Au burn track cha m p io nship in the sa me eve nt, the Jun iors. produced oil field of sev en riders tha t had to face each other twice d uri ng the nigh t. Four poi nts were aw arded for a w in, three for seco nd , tw o for th ir d and one point for fourt h. In the first heat, Fisher ga ted sma rtly and was clea r as th e fie ld entered the first turn s. Bryan Yarrow initially ran second but eve ntua lly fell an d W3:-o cred ited wit h the four th sp ot. Chris . Kerr held the secon d spo t ove r ].J. Martyn'Se In the seco nd First Divisio n Junior race, Yarrow got the ea rly lead , on ly to have Northern Ca lifornia Jun io r po in ts c ha m p io n Eri c Carrillo wor k underneath him and take the win . Yarrow was second , Kerr was third, and A J. Jones survived a starting-line loop to finish in fourth , In the th ird heat , Fish er had his o nly scare of th e evening w hen he was taken out near the tum -two wa ll by A.J. "1 was a little wo rried whe n I fell behind in tha t second heat, but I knew I could ca tch him," Fish er said after the race. "I jus t wan t to thank my dad . Without him , I would have no Speedway titles ." In heat number four , Fisher met Ca rillo for the first time. Fisher got th e ga te a nd was followed by the sm ooth-riding Carillo, w ho couldn' t mak e up an y gro und and had to settle for second place. Bryan Yarrow was third and Rob inso n was fourth. Donnie Robin son go t his first"win of the even t in the next heat when he outga ted and bea t Yar row, A.J. Jo nes and J.J. Martynse, in that ord er . Race six - the last chance for C1rillo to put 1 an end to Fisher' s dominati on - came and went with somewhat predictable results. Fisher got the sta rt a nd assumed a lead he wo uld not relinquish. Carillo, w ho rid es for Rod Lake/Peterich Cycle/Off Beat Prod uction s, ptut in a near ly flawless p erformance behi nd t he cha m p io n but co uldn' t find a chink in his armo r an d finished a frustra ting' second, For the second heat in a row , A.J. Jones was third and J.J. Martynse was fourt h. In the final ri ce of the 1998 championship , Carillo claimed second p lace overa ll wi th a nice win over Donnie Robin son, J.j . Jason Northru p had ridd en Shafer ' s' KXSOO Ihe nig ht before and had turned the fast time until An dy For tne r showed up and took it ~\\'ny from him . Shafer showe d everyone how it r should be done as he set the first-round fas t tim e w ith a blazing 3.035-secon d ru n on his first ride. " Fast Andy" Fort ner , however , ca me back to , na il a su perb 2.989-St..'Cond ru n to move int o the lead in secon d -round action . Fortner was set to take his second st raight fast time of the we ekend. But Shafer laun ched his Kawasa ki with full thro ttle on an d held it the re, flying ove r the to'p in a blisteri ng 2.946 seconds to take the class win and set the fast time. Jaso n Northrup, riding a CRSO bo rrowed from Gayle Jen kins, sto pped O the clock in 3.126 secon d s for thi rd p lace, with John Scro gg ins hard on his heels w ith a 3.135secon d time on h is Honda . Da r re ll Trent brou ght his Ho nda in fifth in 3.237 seconds. Bob Fisher was the only rider to claim two class wins.. doing it on his Superior Cycle Har ley: in the O pen and Pu shrod classe s, Fish er had to come fro m behind in th e Open class as Steve Shafer took the first-round lead with a solid 4.041second run on his Harley , whi le Jerrod lindquis t was in second place wi th a 4.054-second run on his big-bor e Kaw asak i. Fisher delivered in the sec ond round, however , showi ng once agai n wh y he's called "Flyin ' Fisher ." He launched his big Sports ter over the double jump and flew over the top in a breat htaking 3.284 seconds to tak e th e class win in a very convincing fashion. Fish er r epeated hi s perfo r man ce i n t he Pushrod class. His 4.133-seco nd first-round ride had him in se cond pla ce behind Steve Sha fer, w ho had run 4.107 sec ond s. The resu lt s wer e .e ven better th an hi s Open-cla ss win.. a s the Ha rley ro ared ove r the to p in 3.247 seco nd s, sea ling another very impressive class \\in. Th e Open Mo ney m a in s tar te d off w it h an other heart-stopp in g Jernigan ho leshot. He laun ched a good 20 feet furth er than anyone else off the star t stra ight jump to snag the lead into the firs t turn, followed by Lee Spa n an d Brian Young. Jernigan seemed to sp rou t win gs and fly thro ug h the w hoo ps to estab lish a lead that he stre tched to the checkers for a bu siness-as-usu al wi n . Neverthe less, t he race be hi nd him was a c t io n -pa cked . Spa n was und er immed iat e, a ttack fro m You ng , w hose agg ressive ridi ng sty le 'm ad e it loo k like his th rottle was stuc k wide open. Young wa s on a 125 ag ains t mostly . 250s, and tha t explains some of his hy per riding style. He rod e a little too aggressive in the turn , after the w hoops, tak ing him sel f an d Spa n do wn I in a pass attempt. Just before their cras h, Daniel , Yodn g block-p a ssed Kyle Hochste t ler to put himself in a posit io n to capi ta lize o n Bria n r Young an d Spa n's tu mbl e. H e was th en in a . close th ird , w he re he be ga n to mak e tim e on John Melto n, w ho was -hold ing second . Melton I looked like he felt the pr essure and tu rn ed u p ~ some extra steam . He showed good cond itionin g . as he pulled back away from the fast bu t failin g I Yo ung , who th en slowed d ra m a tic all y fo r unknown reasons . He wa s then za p ped by Brian ] t Young, Span and Derek Fore. Whe n the w hite flag came out, Jerniga n was l gone and still pullin g aw ay. Melton had es tablished himself in a stro ng second . Brian Young I still had the thr ottl e stu ck wide open, tryin g to ma ke up lost ground .
