Ian niro stayed in the n eighborh ood , en terta ining the crowd wit h his wild ridi ng an tics, but u ltimatel y he had to settle for second p lace. Bobby Hedd e n, who missed two weeks o f racing to attend his own we dding a nd Hawaiian ho ney m o on , ra n third fo r m u ch o f t h e race bu t dropped to four th pla ce on the las t lap a fter Hicks. Hicks, w ho was seen hastily reb uilding his clutc h in the pits just prio r to the even t; too k back the show spo t. In th e Handicap main, Ia n Ferris bega n the race in fron t of the pack from his t tl-yard-line starting pos ition. Follow ing Ferris in to the first turn was Curry , who started on the 20, and former junior Nat ional Speedway Champion Matt Becker, who ca me off the 30. Charlie Vene gas , who was the quickest of the back-ya rdage guys into the first turn, pushed Becker from third p lace as the pack sorted itself ou t in the openi ng lap . As 'Cu rry an d Venega s followed Ferri s a ro und the track in single-file fashion, Rose Racing's Jimmy Sisemore ap pea red to grow tired of the freig ht train. Com ing from the 40-yard line with Bast followi ng close beh ind , Sise mo re pushed his wa y insid e of Venegas on lap three. On lap fou r he lce created a sp.: insid e of Curry and took OVt:! second p lace. Sisemore ran out of laps in his quest to catch Ferris. Sisemore ma y not have been able to catch the smo oth-ru nni ng t v-year-old anyway, wh o had his first ma in-even t w in of the 1998 Speed way se as on aboard his Pet e rich Cycle!Arai/Off Bea t/Surf & Skate GM. " I won a Ha n dica p m a in las t year, a nd I did n't really thin k it would take this long to wi n an other t his year," sa id Fer ris , clutc h ing hi s han d some first-p lace trophy. "I'm ready to d o this again next week. " Second place wen t to Sisemore. Bast finis hed th ird , and Curry managed to ho ld off Venegas to claim the four th spo t. The first Division Junior main-even t win went to a vis itor from ou t of town: Ga rden Grove's Donny Robinson rode his jawa to victory ahead of Eric Carillo, Bryan Yarrowand J.J. Martynse.
