Paulsen perfect at
Dutch Sport Mot,ocross
By Larry Witmer
BLOOMINGDALE, MI, AUG. 22-23
Corey Paulse n took h is Majic /K&W / MC R/
FMF /Guts YZ to th e win on bot h da ys in th e
125cc You th division. Sa turday was the easier
w in , wit h Corey pulling both hole shot s a n d
checking out on the field . Sund ay wasn't as easy,
as PaulSt..'I\ had to work to the front after a bad
start in the second moto. Jud d Bagladi, Mitch
Pilat a nd Mitch Dervin gave Pau lsen fits early on.
Dutch Sport Park had th e faci lit y in g rea t
sha~, with the add ition of a north extension to
the tra ck. The additiona l track tested the skills of
riders, with clay -ru tted switchbacks and a s.l nd·
box section that got some grea t whoops.
Saturday's 12-15 Yo u th di vis ion opening
moto sa w Pau lsen rip the holes hot around the
righ t-hand com er, \\;th Mitch Pilat on his Suz uki seco nd and An thon y Mil ks third . Pau b e n
opened u p a sma ll ad vantage after the pa ck
reappea red out of the sa nd secti on . Milks had
go tten pas t Pilat in the sand s",, tchbacks for SL'C;
a nd. Completing the ope ning lap . it was Paulsen
first , with Milks w ithin striking d istan ce, Pilat
th ird , Mitch Dervin fourt h, and Mitch Slud er in
close pursu it in fifth. Pau lsen continued to lead
the pack, pull ing away from Milks and the field
thro ugh the th ird lap. Dervin got by Pilat with
an ins ide line under Pilat in the Stadium Sl'Ction
of the track. The pass came in a tigh t left-hand
com er lead ing into a sections of jumps. This go t
Der vin up to the t. ird spot on th e tr ack. Pilat
h
stayt..od close to Dervin, bu t he would eventua lly
end up in fourth for the mot o.
Fifth-spot ru nn er Slud er was und er att ack by
James Taylor on his YZ. Taylor found the way
past in the worlds rockers to take over the fifth
spot. Ju st as it look ed as th ou gh Ta ylor had
fou nd his rhythm, he clipped a comer tire, be nd ing th e shifter aro un d the footpeg. This took the
stea rn ou t of Taylor' s charge in a big way.
Paulsen cruised hom e fo r th e win with a
fo u r-secon d le ad over Milk s. The t hird sp o t
went to Dervin, Pilat took fourth, and Brandon
Slager got by Slude r late in the moto for a top five finish.
Th e second mo to saw Pau lsen aga in ri p a
holeshot over the field . Jud d Bagla d i gated seeond , with Taylor coming out on fire in the third
spot.
Things we nt bad for Baglad i in the seco nd
corne r, which was a lef t-ha nd corne r lead in g
onto th e track. Bagladi d ro pped the bo rrowed
YZ, makin g th e field beh ind him scramble for
positions. Completing the first lap, the running
orde r was Paulsen in the lead , with Tay lor seco nd , De rvin third , Pilat fo urth, an d Mil ks in
fifth . Ba gladi had re mo unted a nd was up to
eighth.
Paul sen picked up the pace and len the pack
in his dust, setting his cru ise contro l on the win
pace.
There was a scary moment when Pilat tried
a n inside pass ov er Dervi n wh o go t his boot
caug ht in Pilat' s rear wheel. Dervin had to bail
off his YZ to keep pace with Pilat. Pilat stopped
and Dervin got his foo t ou t with only a mi nor
bru ise.
Th is wa s a break for Bagladi, beca use the
field bunch ed up w ith the Dervin /Pilat con fro n ta tio n . Bagladi had charged through th e
field up to the second spot, but the charge ended
there, as Paulse n had built up a huge lead .
Pau lsen came ho me wit h the win
"1 like coming to Dutch Sport Par k: Paulsen
said later . "They always take care of the track . It
went pretty easy , get ting bot h of the ho leshots .
The rockers are my favo.rite section of the track.
I'd like to than k my sponsors for assisting me.
Majk, K&W, MCR, FMF a nd Gu ts kept my YZ
fast all day!"
Runner-up honors went to Milks, with a 2-3 tally.
"1 had fun out there! " Mil ks e xclaimed.
"Tha t new sec tio n is cool. It ma kes for some
good passing lanes . I have mad e plans to contest
the 125/250 B classes next year. I'd like to than k

F&S Suzuki dominates
Wyoming State Fair MX
By J e sl Jones
DOUGLAS, WY,AUG.I9
Two tea m rid er s fro m F&S Suzuki of Da yton
teamed up to take three of the top six pro spots.
Kenny Bertra m from Stillwa ter, Oklah oma, an d
Erik Jan ssen fro m Elizabeth, Co lorado, raced
together for the first time at the Checkered R ag
Productions race, combining fast stad ium supercross action wit h flat -track racing . The Wyoming
stad ium was s ta nd ing- room-on ly, rea d y for
v
exciting racing action.
Jon Hedden from Wichita and Tren t Ha nSen
combined to take the othe r three top spo ts in the
pro classes.
The pro mains were close, with exciting action.
There were several lead cha nges, and the winner
was not certain until the checkered flag dropped.
The track was very technical, with lots of timi:'g
jumps. It was a special challenge for the SX bikes,
as it included a seven-eighths lap around the flat
track with a hairpin tum returning to the triple.
Tre nt Hansen do m inated the starts, lead ing
all pro motos out of the ga te. In the 12.C)cc main,
Janssen was in his seco nd pr o race followi ng a
na tional am ateur ranking at Loretta Lynn 's riding the F&S/Scott / GSMXS/ Alp inestars / Whi te
Brothers Suzuki. Hedden wa s in close pu rsu it,
with Bertram tied up in traffic. Bertram quickly
m ad e a move on Ja nsse n, who p rotected h is
lines fo r two laps w hen Bertram passed an d
quickly made his wa y forw ard , get ting right on
Han sen 's rea r tire. Bertram pass l..>J once, only to
be retak en qu ickly by Han sen on the flat-tra ck
section . Bertr am kept showing Hansen wheels,
and in the fina l lap he took ov er first, ba rel y
holding it through to the finish . Janssen was in
clos e p u rsuit, w ai ti ng for the possibility tha t
Bertram an d Han sen migh t take each other out.
In the 250cc ma in, Han sen qu ickly took the
lead , with Bertram comi ng out of the gate last.
Janssen mad e a quick charge through the whoops,
obtaining second for a few feet, but he caught a
peg on a bale, launclling him.>clf into the air and
out of ro ntt..'Tltion for the lead , though he eventually took fifth. Hc-dden quickly took up the challenge for first, with Bertram making it thro ugh the
pack to jo in th e lead er s . Hed d e n did ' smar t
inside-out maneu ver, only to hold first for abo ut
half a la p. Bertram again showed Hansen a wheel
several times but was unable to pass and make it
stick. Hedden followed closely to take third .
