"Flyin'" Bob Fis her ca me clos e, rid in g h is Superior Cy cle Sportster over the top in 4.067 seco nds for second place. Steve Shafer claimed third on his Ha rley in 4.216 seconds. The I'u shrod class wa s a near repeat of the Open class, as Green posted a good 4.015-second time on his first ru n. Fisher aga in cha llenged ha rd, nailing a fine 4.088-second time on his Sportster, but he had to sett le for second place. Steve Shafe r too k the third-pla ce trophy with a 4.146-second ru n on his Harley. Becky Williams from Georgetown, Illinois, was also a double class winner. Her first win came in the 8..'icc Youth class, in which she padded her substanti al points lead with a 5.443-second 'win ning O. ru n on her KXH Billy Short was the only oth er mini rider to clear the top, taking the second -place trop hy with a 6.625-seco nd time on his Ho nda . w illiams' second victory came in the 200ce class, in which she cu rren tly hold s se cond p lace in the points sta ndi ngs. Maurice O rtega led the brakeless Cl ass ic 2..'iOs a head of Vince Graves, Jeff App le a nd John Lefevre. G raves go t by on the back straig h t, only to have Ortega pass insid e to take the lead back. Groves pu lle up side by side with Or tega d in tu rn on e, the two Bultaco riders stay ing there thre e-qua r te rs of th e way a roun d the tra ck . Gra ves had speed on Ort ega everywhere excep t where it counted : across the finish str ipe. Ortega held on to the lead ahead of Graves, Apple and Lefevre. Yam aha rider Don Frau enber ger left the line in fro nt of the 250cc Pro-Spor t race, never looking back to see the fight behin d him. Joe Steffen pull ed in behind for a sho rt-lived trip in secon d, ge tting za p pe d in tu rn two. Rich ard Poll ock went so wide and fast that he was using the outside grade r berm to get arou nd Steffen and into t he runn er-up po sition. Frau en berger held the lead , ahea d of Pollock's Kawasaki, while Dupree worked bock by Steffen for third . Ryan Fishe r a nd Ron Garcia tra iled in fifth and sixth. TIle Bomber class is home to the bikes too new to be vintage but not quite up to the task of co mpe ting with the curren t 600ccs. As both rider s dri fted wid e, Arago n shot inside to pa ss both and move to the front. Kukla settled into second , with Formby, Johnson and Richar d Fox in tow . . The Pro-Spor t 600cc contes t was sched uled as the final race of the nigh t. After a qu ick drag a nd a sprinkle of wat er, the fast guys lined up two row s de p, facing the bes t racing surface of the e night. With the toss of the green flag, the racers were three dee p going into turn one. Jim Kesler led Tra vis Petton, John Dupree an d Rick Reed down the back chute and a round to lead lap one.
