The riders could use any ki nd of bike and / or scoo ter. There were two ba lloons attached to the bike or rid er and a baseba ll bat , w hich had to be plastic. Limited to the a rea betwe en turns o ne and tw o (m a r ked off w it h lim e), th e ob ject was to break the opponents' balloon s. If yo u lost your balloon or fell off you r bike, you were out. The last ride r with a ba lloon unb roken w as the winner. It came down to Gar y Ack royd and Charles "Du k ie " Er mo lenko. Ackr o yd bro ke Ermo len ko's balloon bu t th er e was one sma ll p rob lem : He had fallen off the bik e to do so . Ermo lenko was declared the winner. It was the first tim e anyone has seen Ermolenko on a bike since he broke his leg earlier this yea r. He s till has a bad lim p, but he said that he hoped to be back in acti o n in a couple of weeks. The club di d an o utsta nd ing job of redesignin g a nd le ng t henin g their hill, as we ll as vastl y im proving their entire club grou nd s, Their good wo rk pa id off, as the state cha m pio ns hip even t drew 116 riders an d perhaps as many as a thou sa nd specta tor s. Andy Fortn er had a nea rly perfect night as he dem on stra ted why he is called "Fast An d y." For tn e r pi cked up th ree class w ins a nd also claimed a beautiful Fast Time trophy . Th e fas t tim e was deli ver ed in the bO Occ class, and was a co me -f ro m - be hi nd e ffo r t . Mark Sha fer had blitz ed the hill o n h is first rid e in a n exce llent 4.698 second s, to tak e the class lead and fast time int o in term ission. Fo rtner turn ed in a 4. 893~ sec~ ond ride to sit in the seco nd spo t at the break , the o nlyo ther..rider to br eak th e fiv e-se cond mark. In seco nd- ro u nd ac tio n, however, " Fas t Andy" new his CR500 ove r the top in a blazing 4.690 sec o nd s to tak e the w in an d se t the fas t tim e only eig ht-thousa nd ths of a second quicker tha n Shafer. Sha fer crashed hard on his second ride in a fu ll-throttle attempt to regai n the lead. John Scroggins broke into the four s with a 4.967second run on his Honda for third place, followed by H on d a ri d ers Jason N o rthrup and Mark Sledge . For tner also cla imed the w in in the 250cc class aboa rd his Su zuki. This was a lso a comefrom -behind effort, as he fou nd him self in fourth place at inter missio n, behind Ma rk Goodman [r ., Mark Sha fer an d Kevin Cappello. Good man had taken his KX250 over in a fine 5.146 seconds to ta ke the firs t-ro und lead , bu t Fortner sail ed his RM250 over in th e second round in a sizz lin g 5.034 seconds to mo ve o u t in fro n t. Good ma n cou ldn' t im p rove on his first ru n a nd had to settle fo r st.."'C(m d , w hile Cappello mo ved around Shaf er int o third place wi th a 5.225-second run on his KX250. Don Barber carded a goo d 5.607 seconds on his Suzu ki for the fifth-place trophy. Fortner' s third win cam e on his CR250 in the Stoc k class, in which he delivered back-t a-back rides of 5.597 and 5.5% second s to take the win . Mark Goodman Jr. finished S<.'COnd behind him in th is class a lso, running 5.93 7 seconds o n hi s KXSOO, wit h Jaso n Nort hrup coming in third on his YZ400F thumper in 6.152 seconds . Gary Edmison and Charles Walker placed fourth and fifth. Fo r tne r a ct u all y ca me wit h in fo u r- thousan d ths of a second of winni ng four titl es, as he took the firs t-round lead in the 750cc class on his Hond asaki triple wit h a 5.746-second time. Fortner came so close to another win, topping the hill in S.486 seconds on his seco nd rid e, bu t he had to sett le for seco nd in this class. John Hillard , Jim Redpa th and Jacob . YZ 400 rid er Means w o uld ma int ai n th e lead un til the two- lap sig n ca me ou t, wh en Cryolabs proprietor Par son s decided to m o u nt his cha rge a nd take th e lead away from him . Means would not surre nder a nd tried d espera tely to reta liate. In the third spot, Qual e wa s looking for a wa y around Means. At the finish it was Parsons by a wheel, with Means second and Quale a very close third . Am azi ngly, Means did not get the holeshot in moto two; instead, it wa s the KX of Qu ale tha t go t there first. wi th Meliton Mora les, Means and Parsons giving chase. At the end of the firs t la p, an ov er ea ger Parsons entered the finis h-line turn too hot and caught Mean's rear w heel, taking a soil sam ple. Par sons remounted in las t place bu t would la ter redee m himself by charging to the fron t of th e pac k. Up front, Morales took the lead away fro m Quale, wit h Means in third , Q ua le re too k the lead through the whoop sectio n a nd built a slight cushion, Mean w hile, Parso ns was on the move, his Cryolabs RM slicing throu gh the pack with McDon ough on his heels. Parsons had t he w hoop se ct io n dia le d and worked his w ay in to seco nd pl ace a nd into a position to take the overall. With one lap to go, the battle for the overall became in ten.o;e. Qu ale was in the lead , with Parsons and McDon ough battling for seco nd . Wit h half a lap to go , McDon ou gh pas sed Pa rsons for the seco nd spot, givi ng Qua le the we ll-deserved overall of th e day, Parso ns ' amazing cha rge fro m the back of the pack gra nted him second for the day, with Mea ns grab bing the fina l podium positi on. In the Ov er 38 Novice d ass, Sout hland Suz uk i ~ba ck ed Jo hn Ada ms put in two im pressive co me-f rom-behind victo ries to go 1-1 on the day for the overa ll. Ada ms, riding a 125, was o ut m usd ed on the start by the bigger 250s. Ada ms' s mooth a nd co'nsis ten t style p roved to be th e winning strategy , as he was able to cu t throu gh the field to tak e the chec kers. Steve Evans had th e s ta r ting g ate wired as h e use d h is t w o ho les hots to finish secon d o verall. Evans led mos t of both mo tes, havin g the speed but lacking the sta mina to secu re the victory. Finish in g t hi r d on th e da y was Doug las S te p ha n s . Beckwith whales at Whaleback Hillclimb By Bud Northrup ENFIELD, NH, JULY26 The 1998 AMA Youth / Ama teu r Na tional H illclimb Cham pionship was held on July 25 and 26 a t the beautiful Wha leback Mo unt ain Ski Area nea r Enfie ld, New Hampshire. Th ere was a very low turnout of ri de rs - a . direct result of the "one class per rider" ru Ie in e ff ec t fo r t he Na tio na l Hi llcl im b . O n lv 166 . mo tor cycles co mpeted, including 43 Yout h riders, in 11 classes. ./ The hill was 749 feet from the star ting light to the fin ish lin e, a lthough it co u ld ha ve been eve n longer . It w as a "clim be rs" hill in th at it was very d ifficult to top, the last 300 feet bein g "mog uls," as the locals say . Pock s helves, loose so il, moss-covered rocks , drop- offs a nd muddy condi tions mad e the hill untoppable for all bu t ni ne bikes. N ot since the 1988 Na tionals on the Peoria Dirt Riders' "Old Ugly" has there been a Nationa l hill tougher to top. N ot even one bike was su ccess fu l in making the top o n both rid es; mor e than 97 percent of the attem pts fell short. Th e fastes t time in the mo torcycle classes came in the 600cc class. To no o ne's surprise, the first man to the top in the class was defending N ati o nal Champion M ike Wood , Rid ing a Honda CRSOO out of Bay City , Wisco nsin, Wood powered his wa y to the top on his first ride in 28.446 seconds to ta ke the class lead . No other rider of a 600cc machine stop ped the clock on Saturda y; the closest was Mike Story, who wrestied his Honda 643 feet up the hill. On Sun day, however, Ernie Beckwi th successfu lly topped the hill on his Hond a in 27.465 seco nds to take the lead and set the fast time for mot orcycles. Chad Koopsma stopped the d ock with a 29.940-second run. W(X)(1 go t in tro ub le in the to p section an d came up short at 717 feet, so he had to settle for second place, based on his firs t-roun d rid e . No o ther rider in the class stopped the clock. Greg Thomp son finished fou rth with a 670-foot effort o n his Kawasak i. Bill r aid er filled out th e to p five with a 655-foot run on his Honda. Rob Redmann was the first rid er to top th e hill , doing it in the 400« class on a KTM380. Redma nn's 3O.762-second time on Satu rday he ld up for the class win. On ly one o the r rid er, Cha d Mu rray, topped the hill. Murray also en joyed his suc cessful rid e o n Sa turday, a 35 .161-secon d effo rt on his Yamaha . Mar cel Mathieu an d Brent Stewart, bot h riding KIMs, took the next two places with rides of 607 and 603 feel, resp ectively, w hile Robert Ard izzoni rod e his Yama ha 600 feet for fifth place. The mos t successful rides came in the 250cc class, in which four riders sto pped the clock , all on the ir second attemp ts. Watt er Strank topped out in 29.028 second s on his Ho nda to take the win , Jesse O'Con nor was dose behind hi m o n his CR250 with a 29.333-second run. Rya n Peterson cla imed the 125cc-class win w ith a 621-foo t effort o n his Ho nd a, best in g sec ond -place rider Joe Ben o it and his Honda by' 20 fee t. Lee Miller took the 200cc-c1ass win on his KDX200 w ith a 605-foot effort, som e 14 feet better tha n Tony Marble and his Kaw asaki. . The 750 cc-c1ass wi n w e n t to Jo hn Carbon wi th a fir st -round rid e of o nly 512 fee t o n his s Honda. 111i was a very fru strating class for the Mid wes tern rid ers, Tod d Cipa la, Lloyd Haas and Kaleb Northru p . Both Haas (w ith his Kawasaki triple) and North ru p (wit h his Triumph ) had second-round rides far beyo nd the 512-foot winni ng ride. They bo unced slightly out of bo unds o n the lower, "easy" section and d id not get cred it for thei r foo tage. Th is wou ld ha ve put them in the first two spots rat her than in the sixth and sev en th s po ts fo r which they had to settle . Cipala , as alwa ys, cha rged the hill wit h full thro ttle , but he wiped ou t on the rock sh elf at 499 fee t and had to settle for four th place.
