Eaves too k the lead in the first motu out of the first tum. In the firs t lap. Derick Conner. Darren Corl and Drew Byers fell in be h ind the leader. Conner made a m ista ke and Co r! too k over seco nd in the th ird lap w hile Byers pushed all three places in front of him . The chec ke re d flag came out for Eav es , wi th Ccrl, Co nne r a nd Byer s right behi nd the leader . In the second rnoto, Corl took the holeshot, with Eaves an d Co nne r righ t on h is bac k. Justin Ingram pulled up to fourth, and Derri ck Stephen was in fifth . Byers. wh o took fourth in the firs t moto , go t a bad start, run ning in 14th place. On lap two. Eaves mad e the pa ss on Co rl for firs t and ne ver gave it u p. Ne xt, Co nner pa ssed Corl for second. Co rl was now loo king to hold off a charging Ingram. Stephen, and Boyd Lemons for third . T he heav y ra ins th ilt canct'led the previo us nigh t's car races left the tra ck - as one worker put it -"snotty." But hard work by track personnel got th e track in very good shape, bu t wi th a low line that was slick and ro ug h in spots, as a few riders wh o trie d to go lo w er fo un d ou t. Th e m o st notable class to try the low line was the 600cc A. Phil Libha rt was th e ini tia l leader, closely followed by Bob Sweeten , John Winsett Sr. and Dallas Baer. Libhart go t into the low-line crap comin g off the second tum on the third lap, and Winsett quickly got by both as they ent ered the third tum. For about the next 10 laps , Winsett looked like he was goi ng to "increase" hi s profi t m ar gi n as he rode his best race of the year, hold ing of f Sweeten an d U b har t an d s taying just abo ve th e trouble area. With less tha n two laps left, he abo go t a little too low and bobbled , letting Sweeten by, with Libha r t g rabbin g sec o nd from a sore-g roined Winsett as they too k the whi te flag. Sweete n ' s o th e r w in s we r e e asy w ins , alth o ug h beh in d h im an d second-pl aced Da ve Sm ith an in teres ting battle fo r third was d eveloping. Nick Armen t a nd Damian Koco vinos ba ttled early. but Kocovinos and Roy Miller g ot by a fadi ng Arm ent on th e seco nd lap , w ith Miller taking thi rd o n the next lap . After a poor sta rt, Raun Wood mo ved in to th e fourt h spot o n th e fifth lap and started to pressure Miller . The pressu re paid o ff as Miller ' s Yamah a s tarted to seize agai n in the d osing la ps. lett ing Woo d by, bu t Miller held enough of a cushion to nurse his bike ho me in fro nt of Kocovi nos. w hil e only three riders entered the SOOcc Two-v alve class (for Yamaha Tr",:,()(b), only two o r th ree lengths separated them at any time. After appearing to "l et the kid win the heat," the two other, veteran riders> Dave Smith and Nick Tayler "- took the final lead over Ra u n Wood, w ho w a s ma kin g his firs t s tart on fou r-st ro ke. But as the race wo re on, Wood pu t the 01' Gil Racin g Yama ha into secon d on the fifth lap , and then go t by Smith for the lead off th e second turn on the seventh la p. As he has do ne man y times this season, Zech Ca lcu tt led the 85."0 o ff th e second turn. followed by Shaw n Baer, Tr avis Sen nett and John Lewis .
