Sobe r ' Phot o by Gen Moore AUBURN, CA,JULY 31 Bob Hicks, w ho wa s by far the mo st consistent ga ter for the -No r th in las t we ek's Ci vil War of Speed way, dominated the night's final race, tak ing a wi re-to- wire win in the Scratch main at Auburn' s Fast Fridays Sp eedway . Billy "The Kid " j an nirc mad e a la te-la p p a ss o f Robert Curry to claim the Ha nd icap main win. The Second Division finale went to Scott Olney , and the Third Division trop hy wen t to Brian Leve nton. No less than four ride rs lined up on the 50ya rd s tri pe for the star t of the Hand icap main : Bobby Hedden, Na tional Champion Mike Faria, ..... [JJ ;:l eo .~ 46 Bart Bast and Jim m y Sise mo re. Ledin takes Cambridge ST By Tim McBride CAM B RIDGE, MN, )ULY25 Mike Ledin piloted his Eric Brouhard-sponsored Rot a x to his firs t big win in th e Over 30 main event as the Dirt Track Riders Association hosted round six of th e AMA District 23 Cha m pi onsh ip Series at the Isanti County Fairgrounds . O ve r 30 heat- ra ce ac t io n saw Tracksta r Mc to rsports ' Marty Mataya la nd the win over a hard-cha rging Ledin an d the rest of the pack. At th e sta r t of the eight-lap ma in even t, Mata ya aga in used his ca tlike reflexes to take the lead at the flas h of the g reen lig ht of ra ce s tarter Jim East lee, Ma taya wa s at the poin t of wh a t turned out to be a heat ed th ree -w a v ba ttle between himself, Richa rd Wa sch ek and Ledin , As th e race reached the halfway poi nt, Ledin decided to m ak e h is mo ve and h e darted past b ot h Waschek a nd Mataya a nd into the lead , Led in th en raced to th e checkers while s till heavily pressured by Ma taya and Waschek, Led in w a s loo kin g for a rep e a t w he n he lined up for the Ov er 40 final, As the race go t und er wa y, it was Pat Fargen a nd Don Bet tis ou t front in the early go ing, with Buzz Arn d t. Once past Smi th, Kann cru ised along in seco nd, a long way behind Povolny. The finishing stages of the race saw Povolny crui se his KTM out front wi th ease , as d id Kann in seco nd , while Smith had all he could handl e holding back the lat e cha rges of Luoma , w ho wen t down a co u p le tim es bu t cha rged an d caught Smith a t th e fin ish. In Pro-cla ss racing, usual fron t-ru nners and Nationa l-ca libe r pros Co ry Keeney and H eat h Voss were absent from the program d ue to other racing co m mi tments, giving Povol ny a great shot at taking hom e the gold , Povolny piloted his Dr. Medsker / Moto Pla net/ KTM 250SX to the win in both the heat race and the m ain event, which was extende d from the usu al eigh t laps to 12. Po voln y shot in to th e firs t tu m in the lead , but at the last second he backed off the gas and d id n' t dou ble-jum p the first double in turn on e. Rick Smith , riding a North Sta r Sport s KX 250, d id , however, and sho t past Povolny a nd the rest of the pack into the lead . But Povolny quickly showed why he finished seve nth in the AMA 125cc Eastern Regi ona l Sup ercross Seri es, as he re pass ed Sm ith on la p one th roug h the double rhythm sectio n. Whe n moto o ne left the line, it was Yama ha pilot Mik e 'Beyer s howing everyone the fast way to and aro und the first turn, as he g ra bbed the h ol e sh ot. Ri g ht o n h is re a r w h ee l was th e Kawas aki of Billy Frank, with Musgrave in the third spot. Yama ha rid er Da vid "D uckbill" Sari an h eld fou rth, w hile Ma tt Tedder settled into the fif th position . Whe n they ca me arou nd to com p lete lap o ne, it was Beyer s till ou t fro nt , with Fran k in seco nd and Mu sgr ave in third. The next few laps saw Beyer pu t a little space on the rest of the pa ck, as he scra tched ou t a thr eesecond lead. Musgrave, meanwhile, had closed on Frank in seco nd and was applyi ng the pressu re and looking for a way aro und. Sarian was keeping th e fro n t-runners honest as he he ld o n to th e fourth pos ition, not far off the pa ce. Just before the ha lfw ay sign al, misfort un e struc k Bey er , as he crashed in the back c. nyo n section of the course . 1 Fran k in heri ted the lead and took ad va ntage of the clear track, and he was able to put about five seconds on Mu sgra ve, who now occu pied second. Beyer remo unted quickly and was no w third. Frank' s lead be ga n to shrin k w he n Beyer caught Musgrave, and the tw o began a furi ou s battle that pushed them toward th e fron t. For two laps the Musgrav e ....Beyer clash was an epic, as the two rid ers swa pped the second po sition back and for th and w er e nev er more than a bike len gt h apart .
