Before the end of the first lap, Ursie had moved in to third place and was making up time on the leaders. It was in the big righ t-han d swee per that Ursie took ove r second place and se t his sig hts on the leader. Hollid ay , mean while, dr opped back to fou rth d ue to a pas s made in the woods by Macan. By the third lap, Ursie had mad e his move on Shank and had the lead. Sha nk then had to contend with Ma cari, leaving the leader to ride on without ' challenge. At the white flag, Ursie had a 13-second lead on the second -place ride of Shank, but Macan was still pres su ri ng Shank and he made the pass in th e turn coming ou t o f the wo oded sec tio n. Macari then started to pull away from Shan k but was still 20 second s beh ind Ursie at the checkered flag. In mota two, Chris Pan ucci looked as though he was the man with the holesbot, but his front end wa shed ou t in a corner and a small pileup ensued. As a resu lt, the lead was taken over by Jason Londo n, who was followed by Shank and Jason Pahanish . On the first lap, Pahanish took over second while Ursic cam e from mid pack to challenge Shank once again. Ursie foun d himself in second place after nailing the inside corners and powering past Shan k and then Paha nish. In the sixth spot, Hollid ay tried to block-pass Nesbitt, but Nesbitt squared the corner and cut Holliday off to save the position. At the front, Ursie mad e his move for the lead on Lond on in the .corner before the finish line. Ursie was the only one in the dass who could do all three doubles that enco mpasse d that line a nd corner. Sisemore, Bast survive Cal-Expo Speedway By M. Sober Photo by Gen Moore SACRAMENTO, CA, JULY 18 Jimm y "The Jammer" Sisemore took the win in the Scratc h main wh ile Harle n Bas t Jr . w as awa rded the victory in a bizarre Hand icap main tha t last ed all of tw o laps. Meanwhile, Joh n O'Connell won the Second Division ma in eve nt, and Danny Chipman finishe d ahead of the field in the Thi rd Div ision fina le at th e Ca l- Expo Speedwa y. Due to the less-than -op timum pa ssing cond itions o n the tig ht, one -lane groo ve track all night, the Hand icap main contained more lowya rd age rid er s tha n usu a l. The lone 50-y ard part icipant wa s Bar t Bast. Ahead of Bart on the 40 was Billy [anniro and last wee k's Hand icap main w inner, Tomm y Hedden: Robert Cu rry sat alone on the 30 and the field was completed w ith Harl en Bast Jr. and Ian Ferri s on the 20. Harlen wa s first into the first turn , with Ferris, Curry, [ann iro, Hed den and Bart Bast ru nning behind him. The run ning order altered little as the field comp leted two lap s. In turn four of the third lap, Ferris mysteriously lost control of his [awa - rud ely tossi ng the bike int o the cra sh w al l. With Fer r is a nd h is eq uip me n t sp raw led across the raci ng su rface, [a nn iro, Curry , Hedd en and Bast had no room to maneuver, and they had to lay down their machines or straighten up to avoid com pounding the situation. Natu rally, the red flag was waved . Apparently du e to time restrictions, the final resu lts of the Hand icap main were backed up to the conclus ion of lap two, and Harlen Bast Jr. was declared the winner aboard his Bast Welding / Pe teri ch / Ara i / Terr y's All Cyc le-bac ked Godde n. Ferri s was deemed to be the cause of the wreck and was pr esented with sixth place, while places two through five were awa rded to Hedd en, Bart Bast, Curry and Jannir o. In the Scratch ma in, Venegas d rew the pole and got ou t to the fastest start. Sisemore was stationed in lan e two and natu rally gat ed second, falling in line beh ind Venegas. Hed den sta rted fro m lan e fou r and , together wit h ga te-th ree starter Faria, trailed. the two lead ers as the qu artet negotiat ed the firs t lap . In the second turn of the second lap, Venegas seemed to lose his concentratio n, drif ting off the pole and going wide . Sisem or e pounced on th is o p po r tu nit y and dr ove under Venegas to assu me the lead. "Th is was o nly my th ird rid e on this laydow n GM," Sisemo re sai d la ter . "We ' re still workin g on getting the setu p right. This track was really grippy tonigh t and that fit my ridin g style a little better than Charlie's." Venegas recovered eno ug h to hold off Hedden, who finished third . Faria was a little off the pace and finished fourth . Results SCR: 1. Jim my Sillt.-more (GMI; 2. Clw rlie Venq::;as (G MI; 3. National Speedway C hampio n "Flyin'" Mike Faria wo n th e Hand icap main event while Charlie "The Edge" Venegas owned the Scratch main even t du ring Fast Fridays racing at Auburn Speed way. " It was hot out there tonight ," Faria said. '1 just wa nted to get don e and out of these leathers - as fast as 1could ." Northern California Speed way Cha mpio n Bart Bast also worked up thro ugh the field from the 50-yard line, eventually taking second place away from 40-yard starter Robert Curry as the white flag waved . Chad Felicio, who also started from the 4D-yard stripe, was the first lead er of the race, but he qu ickly fell victim to Curry and then Faria, eventua lly d ropping back to finish fou rth . Curry ma naged to hold on to third, wh ile the fi fth a nd sixth spo ts wen t to Bobb y Hedd en and Billy }anni ro, respectively. Faria was also in the Scrat ch Mai n, linin g u p on the ou tsid e in lane fou r . Hedden w as stationed in three, Venegas sa t in two and Rose Racing's Jimm y Sisemore had the pole. Despite having the adva nt age of th e in sid e pos itio n, Sisemore d id n't get the best of starts, com ing off the line in third place behind Veneg as and Hed den. Venega s mad e a "d ream" start, [u mpin g ou t fro n t aboa rd his IMS Racin g /Ma ch 1/ Afford ab le RV-b ack ed G M. Mea nw h ile , Hed den was wo rki ng the inside groo ve, and in the second lap he actua lly dr ew up eve n with Venega s as th e pa ir exite d t he se cond turn . "I thou ght I was farth er ahead in. the main , bu t then I saw Bobby's front wheel inside me. I knew I had to ge t back on it," Vene gas said. "After last week's fiasco, 1 felt I could really use a win tonight." Hedd en co uld n' t man age to get th e lead away from Veneg as. but he was successfu l in hold ing off Sisemo re and he d aimed the secondplace mon ey. Sise more finished a close th ird , and Faria, who missed the gate from the out sid e, tra iled in fourth place and , su rp rising ly, was never a factor. Bryan Yarrow mad e the best of an all-Scratch restart in the Division One Juni or main , taking the win just ahead of Eric Carillo and A.J. Jones. Th e in itia l runn in g of th e Ju n ior ma in w a s staged in a Handicap format, with all but j .] . Mart ynse stationed back on the 50-yard line. In turn two of lap two, Marty nse pa rked in front of Carillo and the red flag came out. Odd ly, the . resta rt was then changed to an all ~Scra tch lineup ; Yarro w led from start to finish . Cory Call took the win in the Third Division main . David Booth led the first two laps of the Division Two main event but eventually fell vic~ tim to the advances of Ted Taylor, w ho won the Support main for the second consecutive week .
