O P hio ro-Sport HanMile Morehead wins other Springfield By Be rt and Tyler S he pa rd "I SPRINGFIELD, OH, /ULY12 t's been a pretty good weeke nd ," Steve Morehe ad sai d in refer en ce to his tw o-d ay tot al of tw o wi ns and a third-place fin ish . The th ird place . came at th e Du Quoin Mile o ne day earlier , but Morehea d mad e the trek to the C lark Co u nty Fa irgroun d s at Sp ri ngfield and collec ted wi ns in the 600cc and 750cc Expert di visions. Pro-Sport classes were won by Gord on Sch opieray a nd Phil Palmer in the 600cc and 250cc ProSpo rt classes, respectively. Scott Stump top ped the 883 di vision. The 750cc Expert qu alifying was led by the F&S Harley-Davidson/KK /Shepherd & Dr agoo-s p o nso red Mo re head a nd Brett Beyer. Moreh ead had a sca re near the end of the heat w he n an oil-line cla m p lo ose n e d an d caused a lo t o f s moke . Smoke a nd a ll, Morehead le d Jo hn N ickens III and Jerry Van derkooi to the checke rs. Brett Beyer kept Dav e Knapp and Kyle Lon g at bay for the win in the seco nd hea t. Jaso n Sentell kept his undefea te d s trea k ali ve a t the Cla rk Co u n ty Fairgro u n ds by kee pi ng Mo re head and Beyer at bay in th e first 600cc Expert heat. " I am n o t s ure if I s hou ld h ave show n the m w ha t I had until th e main event ," Sen tell said. Do ug Davis refresh ed th e reco llections of anyone w ho se mem ory need ed refreshin g that he was an d still is a very fast racer in heat two . "I just w ant to ru n local events and a few ot he rs," said the sem iretired racer, w ho pu t away Rob William s an d Chris Huss for th e win. Noyes' m ount crea ted so me in te rest. Th e ve ry fast Californian was piloting the L&R Hu saberg flat-tracker. Jer em y Th ompson did double du ty, as he won a 250 Pro-Sport heat, a long with Ray Rees . Th ompson led the first main event of the afternoon to the line by select ing the outsi de pole. The Elba, 'e w York, racer led the field after one tour of the trac k. Fell o w heat wi n ner Re es fo llowed Thompson , with Nick Hummel and Phil Palmer in tow . Palm er was on the move, the ve tera n racer from Indi ana gett ing pa st Hummel and Rees by the halfway poin t. With two laps to go, Palme r and Thom pson traded the lead, bu t Palmer' s forcefu l style prev ailed , and he led the rrn race on his J&M/T Humphries/ Gene's Honda entry when it cou nted . Sentell led th e first la p bu t succu m be d to Da vis by th e second tour. Morehe ad was on the move and by the time the crossed flags were sho w n, he h ad closed o n Da vis . Th e h igh li n e slowed d o w n , a nd Sen te ll a nd o thers w ho were co m m itte d to th e top began d ropping back. That left two of O hio's premier racers to sq uare off against each other. Davis and Morehead passed and repassed for the remaining fou r laps. At the start of the n int h lap, Mo reh ead ' s m ount seized momen tarily a nd Da vis moved to the fron t. But just yards later, the header pipe on Davis' Rotax broke, allowing Morehea d to regain the lead and nab the win on his F&S/ KK/Mike Wheeler Rotax. "I' m no t sure what ha ppened, but it lied up on the victory lap and that was it," Mor eh ead said. :'Hey, we' re close to ho me . W e worked o n o u r h alf mil e se tu p and mad e so me mo ney." Sch opi er ay led the 600cc Pro-Sport m ain from flag to flag. "The to p go t so rou gh a nd d eep, it was reall y hard to turn," the tired but happy Mich iga n racer said . "I had to work hard on every lap ." Kenny ayes go t th e best of Tom McGran e and Jeff Landru m for the second-place mo ney. The 750cc Expert race also belon ged to Mo reh ead , with Bre tt Bey er in the second position for th e en tire 10 quick laps. As in the last event, Diem was again loo king for a pe rfect nigh t of racing, and he was off to a go od start a fte r tota lly domina ting the first hea t race by nearly a quarter of the track . His seco nd hea t; ho wever , brought him toget her wi th his closes t com petitor of the seaso n, To ny B T ire s / Anton ' s P iz zeri a -sponsored . Lenny McBrid e. The Sou thern Tie Insulat ion / Sk y lark Din e r / M RT Raci ng backed Diem gated from four. McBr id e jumped to a h a lf -a- b ikelength lead as th e ga te we n t skywa rd, bu t down the back st raig ht Diem led by h a lf a wheel on th e o u ts ide . Both McBride and Diem d ro ve hard in and ou t of tu rns thr ee and four with no clea r leader visib le. What followed we re three laps tha t loo ked exactly the sa me as the firs t, with McBride taking the victo ry by the narrowest of ma rg ins .
