On the thi rd lap , Webb mad e the mov e to pass Dunn an d too k o ver the lead . Duran p ush ed Dunn for second going int o the fin al la p, w ith Will iams d oing battle (or fourt h wit h Trevor Smith. The che cke red flag ca me o u t for Webb , a nd Dunn managed to hold off Duran for seco nd . Ditto for Willia ms, w ho w as able to ho ld off Sm ith for fourth place. In the fir st few turn s, Duran passed Williams for th ird , with Webb trying to chase dow n Dunn. Bau er was nud ged off the g roove in tu rn three ea rly in the race by Brouhard, sta lling his Rota x by accidentally hitting a false neutral. In bet ween race s, Bauer made some significan t cha nges (tir es, a mo ng o ther th in gs) to his mount, a nd the extra effo rt pai d off. La ngla nd (th e 250cc Pro ma in-event win ner ) was out front once ag ai n after the s ta r t of th e I n-l ap mai n e ven t, followed by Boyd , Brouhar d , Boeh lke, Bauer and the rest of the pack. As the top ru nn in g o rder co ntin ued to s h u ffle, Bau er 's ra ce strategy beg an to unfold . In tum tw o o n the fourth lap, Bau er went to the top ed ge of the groove and sped aro und the outs ide of Brouhar d, w ho was now ru nning in third. He then ree led in Langland as they exited tum four and too k com mand of the lea d in tum one. Bau er then raced on to his first big win. "After I got arou nd those guys , I came back d own on the groove - bu t it d idn't work," Ba uer sa id , "soI s tay ed hi gh and rode s ma r t. J bo rrowed some co mpressed a ir to fill my tire from Frank (Rad loff, a Vintage Twin competitor), and he joked , 'You can use it only if yo u win : There was some magic in that air . Th e first of the tw o sections saw Nesbitt ta ke the lo nger bu t sa fer rou te, while Leiva n o p ted for the to ugher bu t quicker line. Leivan closed ri ght up to N esbitt' s rear fe nd e r and moved ahead when the two riders d id the sa me thing at the seco nd secti on of hills "The seco nd hill was like moon roc ks, a nd I we nt straight over the top," Leiva n said . "Ch ris' line wa s mu ch slo we r, an d aft er I got ahea d of him , I never reall y sa w avy o ne the rest of the da y." Leiva n's lead ";t the co nclusio n of the first lap measured 16 seco nds over esbitt, w ho in tum led Windman n by o nly seven seco nd s. Thi ele had moved int o fourth after a miserable first lap a nd tra iled Leivan bv more tha n 2 1/2 m inutes . As Leivan conti ~ued to hammer away at the fro n t o f th e pack, Windma nn mov ed a ro u nd Nesbitt, w ho was begi nning to suffer from a rear mous se that was rap idl y deteriorating. Bef or e th e e nd of the la p, Thiel e w ould also mo ve ahead of the early leader. N esbitt would ho ld on, to fourth for the secon d lap, but he dropped off the pace d ramatically on the fina l circu it. Leivan entered the p its aft er the second la p to refuel f~ the seco nd and final tim e. Le iva n had slig ht ly ove r two mi nu tes on Windma nn 's Pro Dirt-backed KTM. Thiele held 0I.\ to thir d ano ther 2 1/ 2 minutes beh ind, wit h Nesbitt a nother 30 sec o nds down . Husqvarna rid er Matt Pu rsley mo ved in to fifth, w hile Jeff Sch neider co ntrolled the "A" clas s an d held on to sixth overall. The final lap was uneventful for Leivan, as he kept a smooth and comfortable pace an d con tinued to pull away. In the end , Leivan finished with a gap of 4 1/ 2 minutes to take his fourth wi n of the year on his Dunlop /Silkolene / Answer / Scottbacked Yamaha thum per. Wind mann took the runner-up spo t for the third time this year. Thiele made up som e time o n the fina l lap o n w ind mann to pu t his Kawasa ki o n the final pod ium posi tion .
