Leivan claims Cole Camp win

Team Yamaha rider Steve Leivan top ped round
seven of the Missouri Hare Scram bles Championship. It was his filth w in of the series and his
fourth in a row. Leivan built a co mforta ble lead
ea rly on. lost it all, then retook the lead and pulled
away for the win.
Mike Windmann led th e charge into tum one,
but Windmann lost the front end crossing the first
creek and 'w en t down, jamming up most o f the
• AA· class, Those who avoid ed the ca rna g e
included Kevin Barts , Matt Pursley and Leivan.
Many potential front-runners would crash or
slow cons iderably, or drop out completely. Chris
Thi ele would only make it half a mile before hittin g a stu m p and knocking himseUsilly and out of
the race. Chris Nesb itt also bit a stump and spent
the remainder of the da y trying to finish·and collect a few points. Malt Pursley, who he ld d own
the runner-u p spot for the first tw o laps , would
drop out wi th an ankle injury.
Leivan co mpleted the firs t lap w ith Pursley
d ose behind, and Win dmann recovered fro m his
first-tum sp ill to ridc in th ird . Leivan picked up
the pace on the seco nd go-around and moved out
to a 2O-second gap o ver Pursley, who was holding
back W ind mann b y o n ly a few secon d s . Ken
Yount ha d control of the fourth position. 50 ticks
back, and Tanner EngJand rod e fifth.
Th e third lap saw Leiva n stretch his lead b y
another 12 seconds, while Wlndmann took over
possession of the runner-up spot Pursley was in
thi rd but ha d fallen more tha n a minute behind
Win d mann's KTM. Leivan chose to make an early
pit s top, primarily for fresh goggles, but he also
took on a splash of fuel . Still his lead a fter four
laps measured more than 40 seconds. Windmann
still held second, Pursley was gone from the race
with his injured ankle, and the lead er of the • A « ,
class, Jeff Lappe, screamed his 125 into third overall on ad justed time.

lap race, Leivan becam e hung up on a bottlenecked h ill and w ould go d own, losing a large
chunk of his lead. W in dmarm d osed to wi thin
sight, and when Leivan was forced into the pi ts at
the end of the lap for a goggle change, Windmann
pulled alo ngsid e as the tw o were ent ering the
creek section.
Leivan he ld back Windmarm for a few mil es
until Windmann moved ahead.
Wind mann ma inta ined the lead m idway
through the seventh lap until encountering a pack
of riders. While Windmarm struggled to fin d a
way aro und the first rid er in the pac k, Leivan
seized the oppo rt u nity and not only moved
aro und Wind mann but pos itioned two slower riders between himself and his competitor.
Wind mann stayed close, how ev er, wailing for
an opportunity to retake the top spo t. The two riders were separated by only five seconds when they
too k the white flag.
Behind th e two leaders, Lappe an d Kawasaki
rider Jaso n Co unts were battling for not only the
n umber-one position in the • A· class but also for
third overall. Counts had ov erco me a deficit of
m ore than a minute to close to within 12 seconds
entering the final lap .
Leivan stayed smoo th on his final sprin t to the
checkers , opening a lead o f 50 seconds over Wlndmann to claim the w in. Wind ma nn cla imed the
rurmer-up spot for the fou rth lime this year and,
aside from Lelva n, wa s the on ly other rider to
co mplete eigh t laps on the tricky circu it.
Lappe held off the late-ra ce cha rge of Counts
to win the • A· class and claim thi rd overa ll by 16
seconds, whi le Co unts took seco nd in class an d
fourth overall.
