S o ber P hoto by Gen Moore AUB URN, CA,JUNE 20 In just the second week of racing at the newl y re pe ned Ca l Expo Rod eo Arena, Tommy Hed o den ma de it th rou gh a ve ry biz arre n ight of Speed way racin g, even tua lly walking away with both the Ha ndicap and Scratch main-event wins. • Sha wn Eldrid ge led w ire to wire in the Second Division fina l, while the Thi rd Division victory went to Mike Browne. The Handicap main event started ou t innoce n tly eno ug h, Ian Ferris assumed th e in itial lead from the 2().yard line, followed by 4().yardliners Tommy Hed d en and Pat Linn, Mike Faria was th e first 01 the th ree 5Q..yarders away and fell in beh ind Linn, with Jimmy Sisemore and Bob H icks on his tail . A t the completi on 01 two la ps, not a single position had changed and it looked as il the rou gh , sing le-trac k line wo uld red uce the Handicap main to a freight-tra in run. Ferris tu rned that scenario onto its ea r w hen he inexplicably augu red his Jawa into the tum one gmove, lea vin g Hedden an d Linn wit h n ov...·here to go bu t th e tu rn-two cus hion . The three took the checkered in tha t ord er. Amid heavy pr otest s from th e Hedden and Linn camps, the releree op led to rerun the en tire race . Faria and Sisemo re claimed that they complet ed th e ra ce, too k t he ch ec kered lIa g a n d were don e with the Ha nd icap main . In response to Faria and Sisemore's clai m that the race was completed , the decision wa s ma de to back the result s up to the last lu U ru nning la p, w hich wa s la p two. Darr ell T re nt, h o we ve r , didn't see m to m ind as h e claimed his firs t fast -time award , a nd "Fly in '" Bob Fisher d idn' t care as he celebrat ed his 44th birthday with a perfect nigh t, claiming two wins on his ho t Ha rley. Trent's fas t time came in the 600cc class as he lIew h is CR500 ove r th e first break er, stay ed ligh t, sai led over the second jump and over the top in 3.687 seconds on his first rid e. Trent o vertook Mark Shaler, wh o had posted a good 3.732second rid e to set th e ea r ly fast time. Sha fer , alread y holdi ng two last times in 1998, nearly got his third as he flew his KXSOO over the top in 3.70 seco nds on his seco nd -ro und rid e. comin g up only thirteen-thou sandths 01 a secon d sho rt of Tren t' s mark.
